This plugin is awesome, thank you for creating it! I am not sure if it is still maintained, but I needed to add a couple of features, so I’ve forked it. Feel free to reintegrate it if you ever get around to it.

One issue is that Advanced Excerpt does NOT work with Query Loop block or Recent Posts block, and fixing that would require a complete refactoring. Instead, I’ve added support for category filter on “All Posts”, which, admittedly, is less versatile, but sufficient for most use cases nonetheless – just add links to other category archives as menu items.

Then I added support for shortcode markers that may be placed around some content in order to exclude it from the excerpt.

Lastly, I’ve enhanced the excerpt logic to close relevant HTML tags automatically and not break mid-sentence or mid-tag attributes. While modern browsers are very forgiving, some RSS readers are less so. Default option is now end of “block”, not end of sentence (or first period after some abbreviation, mistaken for end of sentence – oh, that was frustrating). While at it, I’ve added various ways to handle lists and tables within the block – how many of them to include in the excerpt, how many rows/items, and so on.
