  • Some context would certainly help.

    1) What “other post” are you referring to?

    2) What specific steps do you actually take?

    3) What exactly are you calling a “custom template”?

    4) What theme?

For what it’s worth, on a fresh WordPress 6.8.2 site with the default Twenty Twenty-Five theme and no plugin active, I can rename any “Custom Template” that I add myself in the dashboard, but not other types of templates native to WordPress (e.g. Archive, Pages, Front Page, etc)… and I believe this is the designed behavior.

I followed the steps in this post, but there is no option in any menu to perform the function of renaming.

I used the “Add Template” button, created a “Blank” template, made revisions, and then saved and applied it, but I’m unable to rename it.

I’m using the Twenty Twenty-Three theme.

    Disabling plugins made no difference.

The missing piece is the type of template you created. The documentation you linked to is specifically about “Custom Templates”, which has a special meaning here (and not just any template you add yourself).

On the “Add Template” screen, only the “Custom Template” can be manually assigned to arbitrary pages/posts, and can be renamed. All the other template types serve specific purposes in WordPress, and automatically bear the name of the purpose they serve. These cannot be renamed in order to avoid confusion.

So, once again, what template type did you create that cannot be edited?

Hmmm. So it appears that 2023 has a “Blank” page template that I “thought” was the new template I created.

Clearly not, and when I just created a new “Custom Template”, all of the rename functions work.

Sorry for the bother and thanks for the help. Hopefully, this helps others.
