"Dark Horses" Billboard Chart News (Week of August 27, 2011)
NOTE: The "Dark Horses" music video is being shot as we speak.
-----
"Dark Horses" is beginning to make significant inroads on the Billboard Charts.
- This week, it jumps up three spots to reach No. 28 on Alternative Songs/Modern Rock.
- It also hits the Rock Songs chart at No. 50 this week.
- But most significantly, it's No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 Bubbling Under songs. What this means is, it is just outside of the Billboard Hot 100 charts, the holy grail of singles charts, which combines radio airplay across the entire nation, sales data from iTunes/Amazon/etc., and streaming activity from online music sources.
-----
If we can push "Dark Horses" into the Hot 100, it will be the first time that a Switchfoot song made that chart since "Stars" back in 2005. This is HUGE, folks.
So for the rest of this week and next, let's make a push on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+! Post a link to iTunes, Amazon, or wherever else and tell your friends to go get the brand new Switchfoot single. Links below:

"Dark Horses" debuts on Billboard Alternative at No. 32!
Hey friends.
It's been a fantastic past few weeks thus far for Switchfoot's new single, "Dark Horses." Alternative radio has been giving it a ton of love, and accordingly, it's made it's debut at No. 32 on Billboard's Alternative chart. "Mess of Me," in comparison, made it's debut at No. 40.
This is fantastic.
Be sure to keep requesting it and get the momentum rolling! We have our request list here. Be sure to follow the Twitter feed to get up-to-date info and quick, urgent missions to complete.

Switchfoot all over the TV; Live recordings rumors?; "Bullet Soul" debuts on Billboard
For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!
-----
Switchfoot took over sports television in a big way last night during the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game. ESPN has been pushing Switchfoot hard in all of the NCAA Football bowl games thus far this season, but that's not all.
The National Hockey League's All-Star game has a commercial that's currently running "Meant to Live" in the background. Check it out:
Online streamers of ESPN 3 were also treated to a college hoops commercial that featured "This Is Home":
And of course, the BCS Championship game itself saw the debut of Switchfoot's brand new music video for "We Are One Tonight." Contrary to what Hurley told us, we did NOT see a full music video. Here's what was aired during the halftime show before kicking the second half of the game:
The exposure has revived sales for "We Are One Tonight" on iTunes, netting the song a No. 75 spot on the iTunes Pop charts.
-----
Next item on our menu today is a report from one of our readers about a possible live recording done back in March 2010.
In response to our FootColumn that was posted the other day, where we discussed a live "Hello Hurricane" album, our friend Sarah had this to say:
Hey! I went to a Hello Hurricane show in March, and while we were waiting around, all of the security guards were telling us that we were not allowed to take pictures or record anything, because the guys were recording that show for an album. I questioned the validity of that statement as soon as it was said, but as you all know almost every show has several videos posted on Youtube, and ours has 2 that are each about 30 seconds long. So, obviously, people took their request seriously. But like I said, I don't have a clue if this is in the works or not. Fingers crossed!
^This was the Royal Oak show on March 25, 2010. As far as we know, it's not at every show that fans are told to put away their cameras. We are in the process of asking for any official confirmation, though it's not likely we'll hear anything if nothing has been announced by the band. Just thought it'd be worth noting.
-----
"Bullet Soul" has cracked onto Billboard's Alternative Songs chart, coming in at No. 40. Start requesting it at your local rock radio stations and follow the Footsoldiers on Twitter for more instructions!
-----
And lastly, I thought it'd be good to do a quick little background bio on Neal Avron, who was announced yesterday as a producer on the "Vice Verses" project.
- He recently made headlines by producing and/or mixing three straight Billboard 200 No. 1 albums last year.
* Disturbed, "Asylum," Warner Bros. (Mixed by Neal Avron - Chart Debut 9/7)
* Sara Bareilles, "Kaleidoscope Heart," Epic Records (Produced and Mixed by Neal - Chart Debut 9/14)
* Linkin Park, "A Thousand Suns," Warner Bros. (Mixed by Neal - Chart Debut 9/21)
(SOURCE: PRnewswire)
- One of the songs he helped produce, Bareilles' "King of Anything," was recently nominated for a Grammy award for Best Female Pop Vocal. (SOURCE: prweb)
- Anberlin's Avron-produced "Feel Good Drag" was a No. 1 hit on Billboard Alternative Songs.
- Here is an article in which Avron goes extremely in-depth on his production process. Though we might not understand all of the jargon, it's quite clear that Avron is very hands-on in the process, and his style could compliment Switchfoot's very well.

Mega Year-end Update? (Maybe so)
For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!
-----
Hey friends! It's winter time, finals are over, and it's raining like the Niagara falls here in Southern California. I'd like to take this time to apologize for the lack of updates lately, because life has been really crazy for me. But now that school has wound down, I can finally sit down and write this update. So sit tight, grab a cup of hot chocolate, and hang out with us for a little bit!

First off, for a recap of Switchfoot's gig at KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas, head over to our last post. Here's a pre-show interview the guys did with the station:
-----
In other wonderful KROQ-related news, looks like "The Sound" got played enough on the station to make it back ontp KROQ's Top 30 songs list for last week!
LINK
-----
After the KROQ gig, Switchfoot headed down I-5 to their hometown of San Diego to play 91x's Wrex the Halls. Here's "Meant to Live":
and "The Sound":
and "Sabotage":
and "Dare You to Move":
The band also played a show in Milwaukee later that week.
-----
Paper Tongues, the band that has really grown this year thanks to their associations with Switchfoot, did a cover of "Proud Mary." And who else is on it but Jon Foreman! Check it out:
-----
And here is the last item of today.
Switchfoot's 2010 has paid HUGE dividends, especially in terms of the Billboard charts. We saw "The Sound" reach No. 7 on the Alternative Songs chart, two spots higher than "Dare You to Move."
Turns out the band has also made its way onto several Year-end charts as well! This means that Switchfoot has had the longevity to make it onto one of these charts.
First, "The Sound (John M. Perkins' Blues)" comes in at No. 25 on Alternative Songs:
Secondly, Switchfoot is Billboard's No. 7 Christian-related artist of the year!
Third, "Hello Hurricane" is the No. 7 Christian-related record of the year!
-----
It's been an incredible, incredible year. Switchfoot, thanks for another one and let's hope 2011 is even greater, what with "Vice Verses" on the way and all! Also, be on the lookout for some special video the band recently shot with ESPN and Hurley.

-----
Hey folks, quick update for today! I just finished midterms today, so things are feeling good now finally! But as for Switchfoot news, check it out:
It's looking like the singles are reviving sales of "Hello Hurricane!" This week, the record comes back to the the Billboard 200 albums chart at No. 159. May not be much, but it's definitely a start!
It might have something to do with the huge jump at Christian retail, going from 33 to 12 this week. Keep telling your friends about it!

Also, Chad Butler talks to RocktheVote. Article here.

-----
Over the weekend, "Your Love Is a Song" leaped into the Top 30 of Mediabase Hot AC, settling at No. 29. This is looking good for the Billboard placing, possibly landing Switchfoot their first Hot AC/Adult Pop Songs Top 30 single since "We Are One Tonight."
Very exciting. Remember to share around the free download of the song with friends; details here.
-----
Jon Foreman and Drew Shirley stopped by at 96X recently to play a Sessions show. Here, they play "The Sound."

For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!
Be sure to tune in TONIGHT, September 29, for the special John M. Perkins/Switchfoot benefit event at 5 pm PST/8 pm EST. For more details, click here.
------
Well, friends, tonight is the night! The John M. Perkins benefit show called "An Evening with: Switchfoot & John M Perkins - The Sound!" is happening tonight, at 5 PM PST/8 PM EST. Be sure to tune into Ustream to watch the performance, or you can come back to this space, as we'll have it streaming here as well.
In advance of the event, the Clarion Ledger in Jackson has done a story and talked to John P. Perkins and John M. Perkins (related). Here's an excerpt:
The performance will help rebuild the foundation's music studio, which was burglarized in 2008.
Perkins' grandson, John P. Perkins, is the foundation's development director. He said Switchfoot had just finished recording Hello Hurricane when they decided to lay one more track.
Switchfoot lead singer/guitarist Jon Foreman "wrote that one (The Sound), and it became a smash hit," said the younger Perkins. "When they got together in May to record the video, (John M. Perkins) told them about the recording studio burglary. We didn't have it up eight months before it was burglarized."
There's a lot of other great things to be read in this story, so definitely check it out here.
-----
In other news, today is Chart Wednesday! Just a quick update, "The Sound" is now officially the No. 8 Alternative single in the country, while "Your Love Is a Song" has moved up to No. 32 on the Adult Pop Songs chart. Just another successful week for Switchfoot. Keep up the requesting!

The news keeps getting better. Our friend Raven from the Philippines has sent us this bit of sweet news:
The Sound is currently no.10 on Magic 89.9 (popular radio station in the Philippines) ......and no.18 on channelv(music channel)...just wanna let you all know :D
^That's just fantastic!
----
Our friend David has also sent us this bit.
Yes it's true. Switchfoot's Mess Of Me was played on Friday night on Coast To Coast Am's radio show heard all around America. Shortly before the song was played the show's host, Art Bell, told America to rock. Coast To Coast is an overnight show dealing on paranormal abd conspiracies. The song was played at about 12:30 p.m{central time}.
^That's something new. Great to hear that, David. Thanks a lot!

-----
That's right. Got word from management that all you international peeps will be able to download the awesome new Switchfoot "iTunes Sessions" record on September 6! Mark your calendars!
-----
Next, we have some chart stuff that I have obviously been slacking off on. It might have something to do with the fact there is very little in the way of movement this week.
"The Sound" sits tight at No. 10 on Alternative Songs, despite an almost 100 spin increase from last week.
"Your Love Is a Song" jumps from 39-38 on Adult Pop Songs, sticks at No. 16 on Christian CHR, and back up a spot to No. 20 on national Christian Songs.
Another fun bit of chart news, the new "iTunes Session" album was (and as of now still is) the No. 5 Alternative Album on the iTunes Store, and "Hello Hurricane" has reached back up to No. 10 on that same chart, thanks to the $8.99 deal.
The sessions disc also has reached as high as No. 22 on the overall albums chart, with "Hurricane" re-surging back up to No. 67. Needless to say, it's been a great week for Switchfoot!
-----
Billboard reports that Switchfoot's music and live video clips will be returning to ESPN during the 2010 college football season.
Atlantic doesn't cease to amaze with the undying support for this band. So great.

Chart Wednesday (Week of September 4, 2010): TOP 10!; "safe to say we all have a crush on red rocks."
For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!
-----
It's official, folks. In what is a confirmation of Monday's report, "The Sound (John M. Perkins' Blues)" is one of the Top 10 Alternative/Modern Rock songs in the country! Coming in at No. 10 this week, "The Sound" jumps two spots to make itself the third top 10 alternative single for the band. Some Mediabase charts are reporting increased spins for the track over the last few days since, so we could be seeing an even higher position next week!
I'd like to take this moment right now to congratulate every single one of you who has requested the single tirelessly, voting on polls, and carrying out Footsoldiers missions tirelessly. It is because of you that this single is starting to take off, and the band is all very excited! GREAT WORK.
In "Your Love Is a Song" news, the track holds steady at No. 39 on Adult Pop Songs (Hot AC) and falls on Christian CHR from 13-16 and 20-21 on Christian Songs. We are waiting for word on when the focus shifts to "Your Love Is a Song," but we are definitely going to keep pushing the success of "The Sound" on Modern Rock radio for the time being.
Follow @SFfootsoldiers for missions, news, and other bits related to helping out Switchfoot!
(I'd like to dedicate today's Chart Wednesday section to our faithful friend, Ender! This one's for you, buddy!)

The band played the legendary Red Rocks last night. Here are a couple of videos from the show:
"Meant to Live"
Jon Foreman in the crowd
Judging by tweets from the band and all involved, Red Rocks is quite a place to play a rock show. Here is what the place looks like, courtesy of Wikipedia:
And here is what it looked like from the lens of the Switchfoot camp's respective iPhones:
@switchfoot: Not really sure what to say after tonight. Redrocks gave me one of my favorite nights of music ever. -tim http://yfrog.com/2ttloubj
@jonathanforeman: - Redrocks might be the best place to play a music. Proof: http://yfrog.com/n5vangj http://yfrog.com/nggd0j http://yfrog.com/hqasyhj
- More reasons to play a music or 2 at the beautiful red rocks: http://yfrog.com/j6wyjej http://yfrog.com/n39zdvj http://yfrog.com/mr3rqoj

@TimForeman: Redrocks blew my mind. http://yfrog.com/5cc9gej http://yfrog.com/0qz2flj http://yfrog.com/mtvxruxj http://yfrog.com/4jzmbgj
^That place looks ridiculous. I hope there is footage from that place on the next Switchfoot TV episode.
By the way, Andy Barron had the most quotable tweet for the evening:
i've seen many a @jonathanforeman aftershow, but tonight's might take the cake. safe to say we all have a crush on red rocks.
Oh also, Fun Fact: Red Rocks played host to U2's first ever live DVD
-----
NOTE: Right before this this aftershow performance, Jon Foreman said that the band has done a sound check demo of the new song, "Thrive."

From the band's Twitter feed:
"the sound (john m perkins blues)" means so much to us, amped to hear it on the radio- top 10 on alt today! Thanks for singing along...

It's official, footsoldiers! We have reached our goal of the Top 10! We will find out later this week what position exactly the single is in (I'm guessing No. 10), but for now, this is a HUGE victory for the band!
This is now the band's third Alternative/Modern Rock Top 10 hit, along with the 2003 smash "Meant to Live" and the 2004 smash "Dare You to Move." It's the band's biggest alternative single since "Dare," and has officially surpassed the success of "Mess of Me" and "Stars" on this format.
Thanks to all of you who have been requesting the song tirelessly and making this the band's biggest single in years. But we've still got work to do! How about aiming for Top 5? Let's make this happen, shall we?

Video and Chart Thursday: "The Sound" No. 12 on Alternative and "Your Love Is a Song" finally charts!

-----
Hey friends, my apologies for the lack of update yesterday. I know, I've failed you once again. I'm so sorry. ~tears~ So here is the Chart Thursday, in lieu of Chart Wednesday.
"The Sound" continues it's steady climb, now sitting at No. 12 on Alternative Songs, one spot higher than the peak "Mess of Me" achieved! It's also at No. 19 on overall Rock Songs, a career-high for the band.
There has been a bit of a slow-down in plays the last week, so we're going to need to hit the phones and get on requesting the song again. For daily missions, be sure to follow the Footsoldiers on Twitter!
On other charts, "Your Love Is a Song" has finally re-entered the Adult Pop Songs chart, coming in at No. 39. This is the band's first song in this chart format since "We Are One Tonight" in 2006. Awesome.
Let's keep this all up, friends.
-----
The rest of today's update will consist of videos! So grab some popcorn, and settle in for some YouTube splendor. Hah, that was kind of lame. Anyways,
Here's a video from Chicago's Q101 recapping the Lollapalooza after-party Switchfoot played.

Jon Foreman can't be stopped! Last night, he played his first aftershow since being forcefully removed by the police in Tampa. This one went without incident, thankfully. And there are some highlights as well! First, we have "Dark Horses" live and acoustic. Those of you who have been hunting down the lyrics, this is probably your best chance!

It's the chart week of August 21, 2010, and it's that time again to report on all the chart happenings related to Switchfoot!
This week, "The Sound" leaps to No. 13 on the Billboard Alternative songs chart, matching the band's effort with "Mess of Me," in just it's 14th week. At the same point, "Mess of Me" was only at No. 16! And there is still growth with the track, with potential for the song to really soar into the Top 10. Great job on the single so far, friends!
"Your Love Is a Song" has stalled a bit on the Christian charts, holding at 13 on Christian CHR but advancing to No. 21 on the National Christian Songs chart. But on mainstream Mediabase Hot AC, the track has moved to No. 41 from 46. It is steadily growing on Hot AC. Expect it to continue this steady progress.
-----
In what has been a HUGE boost for "The Sound" single, KROQ in Los Angeles has played the song quite a bit in the last few days. They also have a feature on their website about the new album and the song. Here's what they said:

When Switchfoot went in to the studio to record their last album, Hello Hurricane, they recorded enough music for FOUR full-length albums, which may be why it sounds somewhat similar to their new upcoming album Vice Verses. But don’t be fooled though, their new album is going to rock like the last and their new song “The Sound” proves just that.
Link.
-----
Lollapalooza staff posted photos from Switchfoot's set. Here are some of the good ones:

Click here to see the whole set.
-----
The positive reviews keep pouring in for Switchfoot during their opening gig for the Goo Goo Dolls. The Weekender had this to say:
You really don’t know just how many songs the Goo Goo Dolls have since they began in 1986 — or how good many of them are — until you see the band live. Rzeznik is a great frontman who engages his audience, and his audience ate up every smile and gesture.
The same can be said for Switchfoot’s singer Jon Foreman, who leapt out into the crowd for the first two songs of the band’s 45-minute set, “Dare You to Move” and “Stars.” A blistering “Mess of Me” preceded a good acoustic cover of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down.”
“This is Your Life,” from 2009’s “The Beautiful Letdown” was anthemic, while “Free” was explosive as it ended with a big drum and flashing lights flourish. “The Sound (John M. Perkins’ Blues),” a song about a civil rights activist from last year’s “Hello Hurricane,” was powerful and aggressive. Switchfoot ended its set with its best song of the night, the hit “Meant to Live.”

It's that time of week again where we update you on al there is to know about Switchfoot charts! This week, "The Sound" holds serve at No. 16 on Alternative, despite a strong challenge by Anberlin's new single, "Impossible."
"The Sound" fell on Christian Rock from 2-3.
"Your Love Is a Song" fell 12-13 on Christian CHR, but experienced a HUGE jump from 32 all the way to 23 on the national Christian Songs chart, with a giant 338+ spin increase.
Look for "The Sound" to revive on Alternative this coming week with KROQ spinning the track, and several other stations sure to follow. Keep requesting at your local rock stations!

Today, Switchfoot played a surprise show (at least for the rest of us) on the ESPN campus today. Erik Elken, an employee at ESPN, http://twitter.com/Erik_Elken/status/19773711931tweet:
- just found out switchfoot will be playing a show outside on the ESPN quad tomorrow as a thank you for having them at the ESPYs..sounds good!
We hear that clips from the band's performance aired throughout this morning's broadcasts of Sportscenter on ESPN. Here is the band's tweet about the event:
- we will be on sportscenter during this next hour starting now! turn on your tvs! http://twitpic.com/29qxup
Staff and fans seemed either excited or less-than-thrilled or simply confused with the San Diego rock band gracing their campus. I like reading these off. If you're interested, head over to Twitter search.

Sorry for not getting around to Chart Wednesday yesterday. Fortunately, however, the news is good.
"The Sound" is now sitting at No. 16 on Alternative in it's 12th week, up from No. 19 last week. In their respective 12th weeks, "Mess of Me" was No. 17 and "Meant to Live" was No. 19. We are on one of the best paces ever for a Switchfoot single on the Alternative charts! On the overall Rock Songs chart, "The Sound" leaps from 33-28.
"Your Love Is a Song" is a bit more stagnant on the Christian music front, holding at No. 12 at Christian CHR and up 33-32 on Christian Songs. "The Sound" is back up to No. 2 on Christian Rock.

"The Sound" has entered the Top 20 of Billboard's Alternative charts, settling in this week at No. 19 in it's 11th week. For comparison purposes, "Mess of Me" was No. 18 at this same point, so we are just about on the same pace!
On Christian Rock, "The Sound" bows out of the No. 1 throne after a two-week run, falling to No. 5.
"Your Love Is a Song" is experiencing consistent growth on all formats, jumping three spots on Christian CHR 15-12 and on the National Christian Songs chart, the song jumps back up from 35-33.
On the Mainstream Hot AC format, "Your Love Is a Song" is featured as a "New and Active Song," while Mediabase reports it sitting at No. 48 this week.
Be sure to keep politely requesting "The Sound" and "Your Love Is a Song" on your local radio stations!
