A new team of Avengers was introduced in a recent episode of What If...? on Disney+, and the true identity of this version of The Wasp has been revealed.
The fifth episode of Season 2 is dubbed, "What If... Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?" This episode is set in an alternate reality where Peggy Carter has taken the Super Soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, which makes her the leader of The Avengers. The team is otherwise mostly the same as the original Avengers seen in the first live-action film released in 2012, though another key difference is the omission of The Hulk in place of The Wasp. On X, What If...? head writer A.C. Bradley went on to clarify that it's not the original Wasp, Janet van Dyne, but rather her daughter, explaining how Hope was able to take on the mantle much sooner in this world.

The Russo Brothers confirm the changes made to Hulk after the character's scenes weren't well-received with test audiences."Since a few people have asked: Yes, that’s Hope at the Battle of NY," Bradley said. "Since Captain Carter — a woman — ended WW2, the feminist movement occurred immediately after the war. This had a ripple effect across society leading to more female SHIELD agents, heroes, & women in positions of authority. Since Peggy Carter wasn’t around to found SHIELD, that responsibility fell to Hope’s parents, Hank and Janet, and also Bucky, and his good friend, Howard Stark. All this lead to Hope taking on the Wasp mantle earlier."
A.C. Bradley Reveals Other Differences In This Reality
Bradley went on to share some more tidbits about the changes in this particular continuity. She explained that Bucky Barnes survived the war, going on to become a "Jimmy Carter-esque elder statesman," while Howard also survived past 1991, becoming a better father wiht a "closer relationship with his son." Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, meanwhile, are "forever the mad genius science bros," while the Captain Carter biopic was a musical, but "sadly not a Broadway play."

A Marvel insider says Disney is now planning to change course with the MCU's rumored Young Avengers project.The follow-up episode is titled, "What If... Kahhori Reshaped the World?" This one introduces the MCU's newest superhero, diving into an alternate universe where a young Mohawk woman who discovers the Tesseract. Another episode with an alternate take on The Avengers is also on the way, with the Dec. 29 episode titled, "What If... the Avengers Assembled in 1602?" Altogether, the reception has been strong for Season 2, with the show scoring the highest reviews of the year for the MCU.
