The Hills Have Eyes: The Beginning Paperback – July 3, 2007
Deep within the remote hills of the New Mexico desert, a group of townspeople thought wiped out by the United States government when it began above-ground atomic testing has returned to the now-irradiated land they still claim as their home. Within the eye of this nuclear storm good people will go bad, battle lines will be drawn, and a new family of mutated monstrosities must protect their own at all costs in a mind-boggling orgy of blood and vengeance.
The Hills Have Eyes: The Beginning tells for the first time the epic origin story behind Wes Craven's classic tale of mutant carnage, leading into and bridging the gap between the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes and its sequel, The Hills Have Eyes 2. Written by acclaimed storytellers Jimmy Palmiotti (Painkiller Jane) and Justin Gray (Countdown) with shocking art by John Higgins (Judge Dredd, War Stories), this is mutant mayhem as you've never seen it before.

A unique and very well put together prequel to both the 2006 remake of "The Hills Have Eyes" and it's sequel as it tell us where the monsters come from. It's very disturbing yet emotional at times and makes you feel sorry about how Hades goes through on hating human beings including his clan of mutants as the story is also very solid to say at least. This one is loaded with graphic gore galore like exploding heads, an eyeball stabbing that evokes of EC's Crime Suspenstories covers, stabbings and all that for the blood-hounds out there. This is one of the best horror comics ever that fills in the gaps of both remakes and tells us the detailed story nicely done with quality artwork from John Higgins of Judge Dredd fame and storytelling by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray.
If you like horror comics especially EC style ones, i recommend this one even if you enjoyed the movies.
I've always thought the heart and soul of a comic was it's story, and the art is the bones that support it. I must say that as a discerning reader, I was not displeased with the art. It had it's flaws here and there, but it was way better than it might have been.
I find myself feeling a bit sorry for the story, however; it could be have better. The authors produce a premise that's almost believable, and at the beginning you are halfway promised characters whom are well-developed and interesting. Well, that doesn't really pan out, sadly. "Hades'" mother was a character with great potential, but she, I feel, came and went without enough story to support her. I feel a whole issue might have been devoted to her history alone, and I rather feel what they presented was more of the slapdash "highlights" of a story that might have been really intriguing. In fact, I was disappointed to find that pretty much every side-story the authors might have gone off on to add character development and interest was passed up in favor of carrying the story along at a rushed pace.
Despite all this though, it wasn't that bad. If you're a fan of either the first or second movie, this comic is worth a look-see, but my advice is that if you can find it at your local library, just check it out. Don't pay for it, as I guarantee you it'll never warrant a repeat reading.

The graphic novel is pretty much on par with both movies!! Same raw and BRUTAL graphic violence, sexual perversions and a tense and taut atmosphere in the book's 89 blood soaked, gore dripping, gut ripping pages!!
PLOT:
---------
The story takes us back to the very beginning, when a small desert town is being victimised by the U.S. military, who want the town's land for Atom Bomb testing. Led by the brave Karen Sawney, the town flees into the hills and manages to survive as the bombs drop.
Then Karen Sawney gives birth to Hades, the first of many deformed babies, who will grow up to continue the war on humanity his brave mother started.... All for the survival of Papa Hades and his mutant clan....
VERDICT:
--------------
All in all, an AWESOME story, beautifully illustrated that leaves little to the imagination and much to the eye of the reader!! The Hills Have Eyes holds nothing back and pulls no punches!!
This is an absolute Must-Have for Horror genre fans!!
BUY this book!!
Personally, I much prefer the first movie, so however good this is, it probably couldn't get five stars.
However, it is as good as I think it could have been.
