Clovelly Country Club

Clovelly Country Club is located in the Silvermine (Fish Hoek) Valley. It has a fully stocked pro shop with brands like Ernie Els, Callaway, Odyssey, Cutter and Buck, Kate Lord, Tux Towel, and Ahead USA. Their Bar and Restaurant menu has cheese bombs, barbeque beef cheeseburgers, thick-cut chips, risottos, and even pizzas. Their additional facilities include a hall for conferences, events, and functions within the clubhouse. 

Outdoors is a warm-up range for hitting irons, chipping from a bunker, and putting in or around the green. The main golf course has views of the mountain, rivers, and lakes in Silvermine. On TripAdvisor, it has a rating of 4.5/5 from 86 reviews. It is an 18-hole 72-par course. Most reviewers and golfing professionals rank it highly among all other golf clubs in South Africa.

The Golf Course at Clovelly Country Club 

Hole 1 

Hole 1 is par 4, covering 362 meters. The fairway bends to the right, close to the tee grass. It bends around a line of trees and stretches out to the green amid 4 bunkers.

Hole 2

Hole 2 is par 4, covering 301 meters. From the tee box, there is a good rough distance just before a thin wavy fairway immediately before the green with bunkers on its side.

Hole 3 

Hole 3 is par 4. It covers 289 meters. Its fairway is a bit wider than that in hole 2 but is more challenging. There are two streams. One of them on the left side starts some distance into the rough and stretches the whole distance down to the whole—the other cuts through the course from a water hazard on the right just opposite the left one. The water hazard is located where the fairway curve begins. The green is amid bunkers. 

Hole 4

Hole 4 is par 4. It covers 338 meters. The tee shot here needs consideration for the narrow space in between trees that line the tee grass. The fairway is thin. It has a stream down its left and bunkers on its right as it approaches the green. The stream wraps around the green and separates from the fairway, making for a challenging approach shot.

Hole 5

Hole 5 is par 5. It covers 462 meters. The fairway is thin and has a bend at the midpoint. It is lined with trees after the bend and a water hazard on the right. It also slopes at this point towards the green.

Hole 6

Hole 6 is par 3. It covers 155 meters. It is a different challenge from hole 5. The right side of the fairway is lined with trees that thin near the tee box but curve outwards closer to the green. Its left has two bunkers; a big one near the tee box that thins the fairway and another on the front right of the green. The left also has trees curving around the green, starting from the first bunker and meeting the other trees at the back.

Hole 7

Hole 7 is par 4. It covers 345 meters. The fairway curves not too far after the midway point down to the whole. The driver distance to where this curve begins sets up a challenge for the driver shot. The approach shot is also made a little tricky by bunkers around the green.

Hole 8

Hole 8 is par 3. It covers 175 meters. This fairway leads to a two-tiered green that makes the driver shot challenging and the approach even more challenging.

Hole 9

Hole 9 is par 5. It covers 502 meters. It is the best par 5 but the most difficult hole on the course, according to the club. The fairway starts on the right of the tee box. The two are separated by a cart path. The fairway then bends slightly left as it approaches the green.

Hole 10

At the start of the back nine, hole 10 is par 5. It covers 446 meters. The tee shot is challenging for this one. Midway down to the hole, there is a 90° bend that tilts left. There are trees on the left of where the fairway begins and on the right a little into the fairway. The trees curve round the fairway where the bend begins on both sides. After the bend, the fairway is narrowed by bunkers to the right. Hole 10 has a deep two-tier green surrounded by a water hazard on its front right as well as two bunkers on its left and on its center back.

Hole 11

Hole 11 is par 3. It covers 132 meters. There is a big water hazard cutting across the way down to the hole from its left. The green here is flat and deep with a large surface.

Hole 12

Hole 12 is par 4. It covers 340 meters. The fairway here is wide and lined with trees on both sides. It is cut into by a series of alternating bunkers on both sides as you approach the green.

Hole 13

Hole 13 is par 4. It covers 332 meters. It is a straight path down to the hole with a wide wavy fairway that is cut into by bunkers on both sides.

Hole 14

Hole 14 is par 4. It covers 290 meters. The tee grass and the fairway here are separated by trees with thick crowns. The trees block the view of the fairway, making for a challenging tee shot. The green is also a challenge on the approach shot because it is cordoned off by bunkers on the front and shrubs on the back.

Hole 15

Hole 15 is par 5. It covers 470 meters. The fairway here is wide but has two big water hazards on the right and another near the green after a series of bunkers on the left.

Hole 16

Hole 16 is par 3. It covers 170 meters. The fairway here is very small, extending a few meters outside the front curve of the green. The green is wide but has two bunkers on its right and one on its left.

Hole 17

Hole 17 is par 4. It covers 390 meters. It is the “longest, toughest par four on the course,” according to Clovelly Country Club. There are two water hazards; one on the right just before the fairway begins and the other to the right of the green. The green also has bunkers at the front and on the left.

Hole 18

Hole 18 is par 4. It covers 282 meters. Its freeway is wide near the tee box and wavy, with 2 bunkers on each side further down. The green here has a large surface.

Warm Up Range Costs at Clovelly Country Club

To take a few swings at the Clovelly Country Club’s warm up range, there is a separate cost for members and visitors with a little variation depending on the season. 

• During the low season (April to September), members pay R 20 for 25 range balls while visitors pay R 40.
• During the mid-season (October to December), members pay R 20 for 25 range balls while visitors pay R 40.
• And during the high season (January to March), members pay R 30 for 25 range balls while visitors pay R 50.
• Range membership for 20-year-olds and over is R 2 110. This membership comes with unlimited access to the range and an associated green fee rate.
• Range membership for 19-year-olds and under is R 2 110. This membership comes with unlimited access to the range and an associated green fee rate.

Membership Fee

Clovelly Country Club membership fees are paid yearly. The billing is done on 1 October. It then lasts till 30 September the next year. If you pay after October, you will still pay the full amount, but the balance will be carried forward to the next yearly billing. There is no option to get the balance refund if you choose not to renew your membership. A membership subscription costs:

• R 5 990 for those who are 40 years or older. This membership gives you an official handicap, an affiliation with South African Golf Association (SAGA), an additional guest rate, as well as a 10% discount on pro shop clothing and on purchases at the restaurant or halfway house.
• R 4 480 for aspiring members between who are 30 years and 39 years old. This membership also gives you an official handicap, an affiliation with South African Golf Association (SAGA), an additional guest rate, as well as a 10% discount on pro shop clothing and on purchases at the restaurant or in the halfway house.
• R 2 550 for aspiring members who are between 20 years and 29 years old. This membership also gives you an official handicap, an affiliation with South African Golf Association (SAGA), unlimited access to the range, as well as a 10% discount on pro shop clothing and on purchases at the restaurant or in the halfway house.
• R 1 480 for 19 years and under. This membership gives you an official handicap, an affiliation with the South African Golf Association (SAGA), unlimited access to the range, as well as a 10% discount on pro shop clothing and on purchases at the restaurant or in the halfway house.
• R 3 250 for a “Learn How to Play Golf Membership.” This membership comes with unlimited access to the range, the benefit of playing 9-hole golf at members rate, 5 golf lessons, and discounts on additional lessons after the 5th.

Green Fees

The green fees at Clovelly Country club include:

• R 240 Pay-As-You-Play Green Fee for 40 years and older players,
• R 170 for 30 to 39-year-olds,
• R 120 for 20 to 29 years old, and
• R 60 for 19-year-olds and under. 

Metropolitan Golf Club

Metropolitan Golf Club is located in central Cape Town. The clubhouse has a golf shop with a good range of golfing equipment and modern brand apparel. They have a Halfway House Restaurant. The restaurant’s specials are the usual Cape Malay-style foods. Their bar overlooks the Cape Town Stadium and the 18th hole. They also host conferences and functions within the clubhouse. On TripAdvisor, the club has a rating of 4.5/5 from 22 reviews. In addition, it is touted by many as having very good grass. It is an 18-hole 69 par course.
