See the announcement post below
Who Is SoFaygo?
SoFaygo, formerly stylized as “$oFaYgo” is a 19-year old rapper from Atlanta generating a ton of buzz lately.
Earlier this year Travis Scott posted a clip to his Instagram of him playing SoFaygo’s music before the start of Stormzy’s birthday party. The video quickly gained traction online and led many of SoFaygo’s fans to deem him as officially “next up.”
If a Travis Scott co-sign wasn’t powerful enough, SoFaygo also recently received a shoutout from Trippie Redd, with the latter previewing a song featuring SoFaygo on his IG live. The song has yet to be released as of March 2021.
Sofaygo’s original moniker was “Trvllenese” - a name he made up when he was 15
$oFaygo In The Beginning:
The first song SoFaygo ever recorded was at his friend’s house in 4th grade. After his verse ended up sounding decent, he was hooked on the rap life. SoFaygo decided to start taking rapping serious when he started his freshman year of high school.
Back when he just started rapping, SoFaygo, who’s real name is Andre Burt, chose the rap moniker “Trvllenese.” Despite speculation, there is no deep meaning behind his old name, with SoFaygo saying on an IG live that he “(didn’t) know what I was thinking bruh, I was young. I was like 15 when I came up with that name.”
Upon changing his name to $oFaygo, the Atlanta rapper dropped his project “War” on Soundcloud, a project that he himself calls “a SoundCloud classic.” At the time, he had a little over 10,000 followers on social media.
The tape started blowing up on the internet, led by the song “Clutch.” The track features a super smooth flow from SoFaygo that makes it an instant standout.
Most of his songs feature punching 808s over pluggnb type melodies. In an interview with Our Generation he said “If the 808s not knocking I ain’t feeling that shit. The 808s gotta be there. Otherwise, nah.”
He really meant that. Try finding a SoFaygo song without booming 808s. It’s not easy.
“Angelic 7” is a collab tape between SoFaygo and Lil Tecca
SoFaygo Levels Up: Linking With Lil Tecca and “Angelic 7”
His mixtape “War” was successful to the point where Lil Tecca reached out to him via FaceTime in an effort to collab. The two upcoming rappers hit if off and quickly dropped the project “Angelic 7” with production exclusively coming from Lil Tecca. Tecca does not make an appearance as a rapper on the tape.
This is where SoFaygo would have his first big break. The song “Knock Knock”, which is an absolute banger, started trending on the SoundCloud charts.
This led to the track being remixed several times, including a slowed + reverb version that got it’s own dance on TikTok.
We all know the power of TikTok in blowing up rappers nowadays, and SoFaygo is no different. You can find collaboration videos on YouTube with over 100k views of people, mostly “thots”, dancing to “Knock Knock.”
Although I used the term “dancing” loosely. It’s mostly chicks just starring at the camera during the lyrics “I knew shawty was a thottie” taken from the song.
Creative? Absolutely not. Did it help SoFaygo blow up? Definitely.
Sofaygo’s Ascension: Travis Co-Sign, “After Me” Project, and Comparisons To Playboi Carti
“After Me” was released December 17, 2020
With his increased popularity came an increase in hate. SoFaygo was building a core fanbase with every release, but haters are always waiting in the shadows.
He quickly received comparisons to Playboi Carti, Unotheactivist, and other SoundCloud era rappers. In response, SoFaygo decided to really switch his sound up for his project “After Me” which dropped December 17, 2020.
In the interview with Our Generation, SoFaygo says that he “felt like I had a point to prove because everyone was saying Faygo you sound the same.”
“So I was like, fuck it, imma change it up on this one.”
SoFaygo really started blowing up after the release of the music video for “Off The Map”
The 8 track project contained SoFaygo’s second hit song “Off The Map.” For many of you reading this, “Off The Map” is probably the first SoFaygo song you ever heard.
As of today, the music video has amassed 1.1 million views on YouTube alone.
It was at this point that SoFaygo really start popping, including the Travis Scott and Trippie Redd co-signs that were mentioned at the beginning.
He hasn’t dropped anything since the mixtape but told fans his next release would be a single called “Let’s Lose Our Minds!” SoFaygo has previewed it on his instagram many times and you can find snippets on YouTube.
There’s also a popular snippet floating around the internet called “She Wanna” with features from Pasto Flocco and Lil Tecca.
When asked what his dream collab would be, SoFaygo responded “Lil Uzi Vert.” No doubt his biggest fans were ecstatic to hear that. The potential of a Lil Uzi feature to not only make an amazing song but push SoFaygo to the next level are two things fans should be excited for.
He also has music with London-based rapper Lancey Foux, who is definitely a rapper I recommend ya’ll check out. He’s fire. Maybe I’ll write an article about him one day too…
SoyFaygo Outside of Rap
SoFaygo seems like a really chill guy. He records all his music at home on Garageband and does the mixing himself. Rather than go to strip clubs like most rappers, he prefers to watch anime and chill at the crib.
His favorites are Attack On Titan, Spirited Away, and The Promised Neverland.
Some of SoFaygo’s favorite animes.
For my anime fans reading this, definitely check all 3 of them out. Although I’m sure you have because everybody and their mom watches AoT now…
SoFaygo even likes anime to the point where he wants to have his own anime studio one day. I have to admit that would be the most badass venture I’ve ever heard a rapper take part in. Really hoping he can pull that off one day.
In addition to music, SoFaygo’s other talent seems to be drawing.
In the Our Generation interview he tells the host that he used to make his own earlier album covers before he got famous enough to pay people to do it. While he doesn’t have plans to pursue drawing full time, he still sketches whenever he needs a break from music.
Was SoFaygo ever known as Ofaygo?
No. SoFaygo never went by “Ofaygo”, although he doesn’t mind the name. People most likely started referring to him as Ofaygo when he had the “$” in his name and some search engines weren’t able to show the dollar sign symbol, causing it to disappear in search results.
SoFaygo’s Beef With Summrs and Slayworld
The details of the beef between SoFaygo and Summrs are murky but I’ll do my best to explain.
The beef seems to have started due to a beef between SoFaygo and another Slayworld member KanKan. Why the two started beefing is unclear, but KanKan dropped a diss track towards SoyFaygo titled “Slimey” in 2019.
The song contained the lyrics:
“Pouring that Fanta, I'm pouring the mango
Fuck that even mean? N*gga, fuck is a Faygo?”
It’s disputed amongst fans if this was even a diss, but it seems likely. I’ll admit, it’s pretty light to set off an entire feud.
But hey, that’s rap.
In response, SoFaygo dropped a response track “Rat Runners”, which Summrs did not appreciate.
Soon after during an IG Live, a fan asked if there would ever be a Slayworld & Faygo collab, to which Summrs said “FUCK NO!” multiple times.
Unfortunately for Summrs, SoFaygo would sample this clip in his diss track “Let The Girls Slay” on the Tecca-produced project “Angelic 7.”
In the song, SoFaygo alludes to Summrs getting robbed and calling the police as well as an incident in which SoFaygo asked Summrs for a feature and was declined. Presumably this happened in the past before all the beef during a time when Summrs was the bigger artist.
There’s obviously no way to confirm this, but it would make sense why SoFaygo was so trigger happy and prepared to drop a diss.
Now things get even more unclear.
Apparently Summrs was also beefing with Lil Tecca because Tecca gave a beat he wanted to SSGKobe, another upcoming rapper with a similar sound. Summrs had already accused Kobe of stealing his flow.
So the fact that SoFaygo dissed Summrs on a track that was produced by another rapper Summrs was beefing with was just more salt in the wound.
Are SoFaygo and Summrs still beefing? No. In February 2020 SoFaygo went on live to say that there is no beef “This shit is about getting money and making people happy with our music. This is not beef no more”
Whatever happened, the two talked it out and decided to put it in the past
Will SoFaygo Blow Up? 2021 XXL Freshman List? Major Label Signing?
How far can SoFaygo go? XXL List? Mainstream artist? Time will tell…
SoFaygo has one of the more polarizing sounds I’ve ever heard. Go check Reddit and it seems half of people already think he’s the goat and the other half think he’s a clone. Regardless of where you stand, it’s important to remember he is only 19.
As he matures and get’s more popular, his sound will undoubtedly change. Fans are way too hard on rappers for how they sound when their career is in the infancy stage. Give the man some time to actually “get on” first before we start labeling him as a clone and a fraud.
Personally, I’m excited to see where his career goes from here. We haven’t seen someone with a sound close to SoFaygo’s blow up since Lil Tecca in 2018.
Does Sofaygo have the sound to ever go mainstream? Will these massive cosigns be enough to get his music on the charts?
The answer, in my opinion, is yes.
