Critic Reviews for Master of None Season 3: Moments in Love

All Critics (39) | Top Critics (21)

Master of None replicates one of the more frustrating pitfalls of breakup stories: not sufficiently showing why a couple liked each other initially, thereby weakening the blow of their parting.

May 31, 2021 | Full Review…

Moments in Love has been billed as an exploration of a marriage; in practice, though, it's a fascinating, achingly bleak study of an anti-marriage, a relationship so worn or corrupted that it feels more isolating than being alone does.

May 31, 2021 | Full Review…

Naomi Ackie is a revelation as Alicia, bringing a grounded determination to her efforts to have a baby and build the life she wants.

May 24, 2021 | Full Review…

It's sometimes too languorous for its own good, especially in its midsection, but it builds to a powerful pair of final episodes that really elevate Ackie, who gives a phenomenal performance.

May 20, 2021 | Full Review…

Master of None: Moments in Love is an emotional triumph precisely because of the confidence it wields in its arresting genuineness. It is raw in its mundanity, respectable in its patience, and touching in its stillness.

May 19, 2021 | Full Review…

Season 3 tries to forge new ground and ends up on a familiar path instead. It's a de-evolution of the series' wide-ranging ethos, trading dozens of unexpected moments in order to refashion just one.

May 19, 2021 | Rating: B- | Full Review…

Naomi Ackie owns the show. I'll go further, Ackie owns every frame she is in.

Jun 3, 2021 | Full Review…

While this season may not feel as natural, with Master of None's tumultuous history, you may just forgive the show for all its missteps.

Jun 2, 2021 | Full Review…

Like the best parts of season two, season three of "Master of None" is a throwback, a love letter to introspective art-house fare. It's a wild departure from the more pedestrian framework of the first season, but it's yet another welcome turn.

Jun 1, 2021 | Full Review…

The final two episodes are excellent, and more than make up for the slow pace of the front end of the season... It isn't the same as past seasons, and it isn't necessarily better, but it's definitely worth the watch.

May 27, 2021 | Full Review…

Without casting a clear point of view on the characters, the series captures the push-and-pull between between personal choice and external pressures.

May 26, 2021 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Moments in Love's more exaggerated affinity for candid realism helps these chapters stand apart from the series' first two runs while still feeling tethered.

Audience Reviews for Master of None: Season 3: Moments in Love

Season One and Two were great...Season Three drags along like a snail on a turtle's back. In one scene they're just standing there folding laundry for what seemed like an hour. zzzzzzzzzzz

Loved the first two seasons. You can deal with really tough subjects with humor like the Kominsky Method but this show went out of its way to not be funny which created a bait and switch problem for me. This doesn't feel like the same show and should not be considered season 3 but "Moments in Love" and the trailer should include parts of this season only, because its a completely different show. For example, Aziz goes out of his way to be unfunny on episode 1 and do something people rarely do which is argue with their partners when visiting friends. He tried his best to be unfunny and unlikable, unlike season 1 and 2. This "season" is really a spin off which is fine but then place it separately on Netflix. Loved the first two seasons, but not this. The subject matter, a couple trying to have a kid through surrogacy is a great topic, but the change in style from the previous two seasons was jarring. Personally I prefer to deal with hard subjects with humor and this season seemed more like a Lifetime show.

So painfully boring. Terrible idea to center this season around Denise. She was not an interesting character to start with. Giving an entire season to this story was a total whiff.

It's very hard to articulate how boring the 1st episode was, so I give you an anecdote; I have used this website for many years but I don't recall ever writing a review until now. Clearly something big changed with this show, enough where the production crew decided to drink the KoolAid of TV.

(Warning: don't watch unless you're into a story solely revolving around a lesbian couple tying to get pregnant displayed in a stereotypical cinematically artsy way. E.I, it has nothing to do with the show). I couldn't wait for this show to return with another season. However, this was the most disappointing show I've encountered because of my anticipation and enjoyment of the previous 2 seasons. There was nothing funny. This was overly serious, unemotionally somber, redundant in scenes, and extremely slow in pace. It was only 5 episodes and yet it felt like an extended season that wouldn't end.

No, it is not enough to have underrepresented voices on the screen. Not if the story is inauthentic. Just because the issues addressed are heavy does not make for substance. Way too much emphasis on making pretty, Wes Anderson style shots that highlight the space more than the people. So much lingering on scenes that have little resonance. I know they're trying to make this a "slice of life" style series but it's so rigid in other ways it just feels pretentious. Missed opportunity.

Way too slow and boring. Some elements that worked in the first two seasons are completely overdone. The pace seems to be deliberately slow to the point of watching the show feeling like a chore. I was exited to watch the show during my flight, but the most exiting viewing experience I got in the airplane was the safety video demonstration.

You will find very little of the beauty and wit from the first two seasons here. Nor will you find any characters to be emotionally invested in. I admire Ansari wanting to tell a different story, but this should never have been billed as a continuation of Master of None. Those first two seasons are absolute gems, worthy of watching again. This was a slow, hot mess. After 4 episodes, there are so many places to go to end the season in episode 5 and it goes to the very worst place possible, and making very little sense. I can understand the audience score here. I was surprised by the poor writing, as that was in no way the case for seasons 1 and 2. Worst of all, this season was simply boring.

This show was never that great to begin with but you hoped it would find its footing and get better. Nope!

Why? I was so excited to see a new season of Master of None. I loved the first two seasons and was waiting to see the resolution of the relationship between dev and Francesca. Not only did we get no resolution of that story line, they completely abandoned many of the characters we know and love and introduce new characters we have never met before and focus almost entirely on them. The story line is pretty good but the pace was extremely slow and I couldn't help but fast forward past the minutes of complete lack of dialogue and uninteresting activity. Don't waste your time just hope for a back pedal in season four.
