Tan Zhongyi
Tan Zhongyi is the sixteenth Women's World Champion (2017-2018) and the fifth Chinese woman chess player to win that title. The winner of the World Chess Olympiad as a member of the Chinese national women's team (2016).
Tan Zhongyi was born on May 29, 1991, in Chongqing, a port city in central China, which played the role of national capital during the Second World War and the occupation of a considerable part of the Celestial Empire by Japan. Young Tan started practicing chess on the coattails of Xie Jun, but, unlike many stars of her generation, she did not go the Beijing sports school because she was well supported in her home town.
The young Chinese girl soon distinguished herself in children's competitions by winning the world championship three times in a row (from 2000 to 2002). Success in professional chess followed shortly: Tan Zhongyi took first place in the World student championship, won China Women Masters (2013, 2015), the Asian blitz (2014) and rapid (2015) championships. 2015 saw the China's Queen of Chess Tournament and, in the absence of Hou Yifan, Tan upset Ju Wenjun in the decisive match.
As a member of the Chinese national women's team, Tan Zhongyi became the Olympic women's champion (Baku, 2016) and a two-time World women's champion. In Baku, she also won the gold medal for the best result on the fourth board. The Chinese women's champion (2015) has been a woman grandmaster since 2009 and was awarded an honorable title of GM in 2017.
In the 2017 knockout World championship in Iran, the strong-willed Chinese chess player defeated Sabina Foișor in the first round and then won incredibly dramatic matches against Anna Ushenina and Padmini Rout. Then she managed to eliminate Ju Wenjun and then almost miraculously beat Harika Dronavalli. In the finals, Tan Zhongyi competed against Anna Muzychuk, the rating favorite, but in the decisive match of the exhausting marathon the Chinese chess player turned out to have stronger nerves – it was she who became the sixteenth World Women's Champion.
In May 2018, Tan Zhongyi played the World Women's Championship Match against her compatriot Ju Wenjun and lost 4.5-5.5 in a persistent struggle.
So far, 2019 has been very successful to Tan Zhongyi. First, she won the first women's prize at a prestigious Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival and then won the World Team Championship in Nur-Sultan as a member of the Chinese national team. She also showed the best result on the first board in this competition.
