It is estimated that there are at least 45 000 species of animals, plants and fungi in Finland (Rassi ym. 2010). The number of known species is about 27 000 animal, 4500 plant and 7500 fungal species. Insects make up the overwhelmingly largest group in Finland, with over 20 000 known species out of a total estimated to be over 30 000 species. Also in fungi and some other groups the number of unknown species is without question considerable.
