Social Media Lab

A former American President Mr. Franklin Rooservelt had observed much before computer came of age – “A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car, but if he has a university education, he may steal the whole rail road.” And if it is elaborated a little further….if he happens to be cyber savvy, he might even steal the whole world. Increasing complexity and adaptation of computing technologies will mean greater threats to cyber safety. Even people who are not using computers would be put to risk.
The engagement of IT industry and the enforcement agency started way back in 2003-04 with NASSCOM’s former chairmen Mr. Atul Nishar and Harish Mehta along with Raj Saraf (Zenith Computers), Vijay Mukhi, and many other key supporters took the lead in taking the Cyber Safety initiative in Mumbai from a humble beginning in 2003-04 to a massive awareness campaign across Mumbai city and beyond this year. The credit equally is due to tech friendly Commissioners of Police viz Dr. Satya Pal Singh, Mr. A. N. Roy, Mr. D. Sivanadhan, and Mr. Sanjiv Dayal. This initiative is worth replicating across the country as this "Cyber safety" initiative has become a brand ambassador for NASSCOM and DSCI. We should continue to leverage the work done and take this forward in other locations as well.
This year, we could scale newer heights by bringing the entire Bollywood industry to speak about Cyber safety in front of NASSCOM and DSCI backdrop and holding our brands in their hands....very thoughtful and lots of learning as to how one could leverage social media in building awareness and brand. These endorsements were very effective in conveying the message. http://www.youtube.com/user/cybersafety2013 . Thanks to Mumbai Police, we could get top celebrities and huge branding for NASSCOM and DSCI.
I am pleased to enclose some very interesting documents that were published during the Cyber Safety Month this year, they include :
- Mobile App called Mumbai Police: ICE (in Case of Emergency) was launched by Amitabh Bachchan and Hon’ble Home Minister of Maharashtra. The application was developed by KPMG as knowledge Partner.
- Booklet on "Parental Guidance on Cyber safety". We believe that the best policeman are your parents. We believe that it is the prime responsibility of parents to understand technology so that they can protect their kids in cyber space.
- Booklet on "Cyber Safety Do's and Don'ts ." Cyber crimes are growing exponentially and it is also the individual's responsibility to make himself/herself safe on the web. This booklet talks about who you can protect yourself on the web.
- Booklet on "Social Media, the law and cyber crimes in India." Everyone is on the social web and women and children are especially vulnerable. This booklet explains how robust our cyber laws are in protecting us in cyberspace.
- "Snakes and Ladders". We need to explain cyber security in a fun way and what best than by using the snakes and ladders game.
- We had printed over 15000 posters to explain cyber security in an engaging way and distributed in schools and colleges across Mumbai City
- We trained 150 police officers who in turn could reach out to 360 schools and colleges and addressed over 1.5 lac students in a day.
- A One minute film on cyber security with a difference. We have used leading film stars like Priyanka Chopra, Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Sachin Tendulkar along with the Mumbai CP and backed up with the NASSCOM leaders , an unbeatable trio to hit home the message of cyber security. This would be played in all theatres in Mumbai and also on the web and mobiles.
- Three YouTube Videos of Film and television personalities spreading message of Cyber Safety. CD containing these videos.

Other major breakthrough was with the judiciary as we could train over 170 Senior and District Judges both at the High Court where Hon'ble Chief Justice of Bombay High Court inaugurated the session and at the Judicial Academy.
In 2003-04, under the leadership of Dr. Satya Pal Singh as the Joint Commissioner of Police, Mumbai, we had launched the first Cyber Lab of the country. This year under his leadership as the Commissioner of Police, Mumbai, Mr. Sadanand Date, Jt. CP (L & O) approached NASSCOM for assistance in setting up the Social Media Lab (SML). The SML was inaugurated by CP on 16th March 2013, where NASSCOM has formally handed over the SML technical infrastructure to Mumbai Police for its day-to-day operations. Click here to view a Press note issued by Mumbai Police. Our association with SML as the Knowledge Partner is limited to providing the technical infrastructure and the initial training to the Police personnel for SML. Reliance Foundation has supported this initiative as Program Partner
We have found this Outreach through PPP model as the best way to serve the community and to achieve our objectives of spreading Cyber Awareness in the society.
