Evroko merges with Solidarity Movement
Evroko turned a page on Friday, following its decision to merge with MEP Eleni Theocharous’ Solidarity Movement ahead of May elections.
MP Demetris Syllouris, the head of the European Party also known as Evroko, made the announcement on Friday at a news conference.
“Before the elections, there will be a Solidarity Movement enhanced by the European Party’s people, ideas, and policies,” said Syllouris.
He added that the merge comes as proof that there are no personal agendas or ambitions.
The MP also said that Evroko members will campaign on the same ticket as Theocharous’s Solidarity Movement, although it is not yet clear if she will be named officially the leader on the new ticket.
Evroko was founded in 2005 and has managed to grab a maximum of two seats in the House. However, under new legislation, it is unlikely the party would have enough votes to enter Parliament.
Theocharous, who got a seat in the European Parliament on ruling Disy party’s ticket, parted ways with her former party in 2015, citing strong differences on the Cyprus issue.
In November 2015, Theocharous launched a new Solidarity movement which she said would represent struggling citizens fighting for their rights.
