China's sailing camp says the historic world title secured by Xu Lijia at the Laser Radial World Championships is a timely boost to the team as it aims to break its gold medal jinx in 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Xu, a 19-year-old rising star from Shanghai, recorded a stunning victory in the championships held in Marina del Rey, California, to become the first Chinese sailor to land a world title in a sailing Olympic event.
"The victory is very meaningful to the Chinese camp when the Olympic Games is only two years away," said Li Quanhai, deputy head of China National Aquatic Sports Administrative Centre.
"That will be a big inspiration for Chinese sailors ahead of the Beijing Olympics. …
