Virtue/Moir teamed up in 1997. They are the first North American ice dancers to win the Olympic gold medal. They are also the first Canadian ice dancers to win the ISU World Junior Championships (in 2006). Moir's elder brother Danny competed at the international junior level as well and now coaches. His mother is a skating coach and his father played hockey. The couple missed most of the 2010/11 season after Virtue underwent surgery to treat chronic exertional compartment syndrome on both shins. She already had surgery for the same injury in September 2008. The couple returned to competition in February 2011 for Four Continents but withdrew during the Free Dance.
