The University of Alberta ranks among the top three Canadian universities in annual sponsored research funding, including clinical trials and related research funding.

The U of A is home to seven of 16 Campus Alberta Innovates Program Chairs from Alberta Enterprise and Advanced Education. The $6-million CAIP Chairs program supports research on energy and environment, food and nutrition, neuroscience/prions, and water.
As well, the university has 46 Tier 1 and 40 Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs at a total value of $13.2 million. The U of A also has three prestigious Canada Excellence Research Chairs, the most at any university. The federal government funds the CERCs to attract the world’s top talent to Canada.
