NJ Rugby has first championships

The NJ Rugby State Championships were played last weekend at Rutgers University.

The first league season of the New Jersey SBRO spanned from the last week in March to the final weekend of April. Each club played the other clubs in their division once, determining the final seeds, heading into the State semifinals which were played on the weekend of May 6th.

In the first Division, Union came out on top in winning all three of their matches and posting 186 point differential. Morris came in with the second seed with Cape Storm and West Milford rounding out the division.

The second division saw the Bergen Barbarians taking the league title and number 1 seed, followed up by Princeton. Monmouth, Somerset and Essex rugby clubs rounded out the standings, with Monmouth and Somerset advancing to the state finals.

In the NJ Rugby High School division, Delbarton gained the top seed by manner of point differential, narrowly edging out Saint Augustines. Christian Brothers Academy and Saint Peters Prep also made the state semis.

Union and Morris advanced from the D1 semifinals, Saint Peters and Delbarton from the High School division and Princeton AC and Bergen from D2.

Delbarton defeated Saint Peters prep 43-3 to win the first High School State Finals.

Princeton defeated Bergen to win from D2.

Union won over Morris to win the first NJ Rugby Division 1 State final.

Congrats to all that participated, and we look on, now, to grow the sport of rugby in New Jersey, and develop our young players into the most competitive in the country. Stay tuned for information on the Youth sevens and select side programs,
