Welcome from the President

Since the IAAF introduced the World Junior Championships in 1986, this event has become the showcase of aspiring young champions from around the world. Many of the stars of today won their first laurels in the IAAF World Junior Championships and we can look forward to seeing these senior champions of tomorrow in action at the end of July beside the stunning backdrop of the Lac d'Annecy.

What could be more refreshing after the frenzy of the football World Cup, than the magnificent spectacle of these young athletes from all around the world competing in the peaceful setting of Annecy.

In the last edition of the IAAF World Junior Championships, which took place in Sydney in 1996, we counted the participation of 1080 athletes from 143 countries: as I write these few words, the preliminary entries exceed 1600 athletes from no fewer than 161 Member Federations. I feel sure that the 7th IAAF/Coca-Cola World Junior Championships will be one of the best ever in the history of this competition.
