A prince falls for a peasant girl in a fairy tale kingdom.

In 17th-century Spain, the handsome, arrogant Prince Ramon refuses to choose a bride from the seven marriageable princesses whom his mother has selected as most deserving of becoming his wife. Ignoring his stately duties, he rides off on his white stallion, gets thrown in a meadow, and walks to a monastery. There he meets a simple and pure-hearted friar, Brother Joseph, who amuses the local children by leaping into the air and flying about the countryside. Brother Joseph presents the prince with a donkey and a bag of flour and instructs him to search for a woman who will make him seven dumplings. Leaving the monastery, the prince finds his stallion in the possession of a peasant girl, Isabella. Taken by her beauty he orders her to make the seven dumplings, but overcome by hunger Isabella eats the seventh dumpling. To taunt her for her disobedience, the prince feigns death and then disappears. In her distress, Isabella visits a group of witches, who give her a magic spell to bring the prince back to life; but she jumbles the incantation and renders the prince paralyzed. His soldiers find Isabella and bring her to the palace, and she breaks the spell with a magic kiss. Despite his growing affection for Isabella, the prince punishes her by nailing her in a barrel and rolling her toward the sea. Some street urchins rescue her, however, and she returns to the palace to work as a scullery maid. Meanwhile, the viceroy has ordered the prince to pick his bride from the seven princesses. By now in love with Isabella, he disguises her as a princess and enters her in a dishwashing contest to determine who will be his bride. Isabella fails to win when one of her rivals arranges for some of Isabella's dishes to break upon being touched. Filled with despair, she decides to drown herself, but Brother Joseph, now a heavenly saint, intervenes and sends her back to the castle. Once there, Isabella exposes those who plotted against her and is happily reunited with the prince.
