Star Awards 2012 nominees are out!

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! It’s that time of the year again, when visions of trophies dance in stars’ heads. Yes, Star Awards season approacheth! The nominations for 2012 were announced this morning, and our nominees are, for the most part, still trying to take it all in.

“I’m very surprised!’ said Ann Kok, who got a Best Actress nomination for her role in Bountiful Blessings. “Nominations are always a good surprise.” Ann’s not sure about her chances of winning though, saying, “The rest of the nominees have all gotten Best Actress awards before.”

Andie Chen woke up to a bunch of missed calls and the news of his Best Actor nomination for Code Of Honour. “I’m used to putting in a hundred percent and expecting zero percent – I thought it was my fate for a while – so whatever attention I get is a bonus!” he chuckled.

Andie continued: “If it brings me more fame, that will bring me better scripts, and better scripts mean more options in characters, so hopefully I’ll be able to bring audiences more exciting characters.”

Showbiz Sista, signing out. Live long and pop corn!

Who you gonna call? Rescue 995!

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! This is your Showbiz Sista putting the siren on to herald the brand new Channel 8 medical drama, Rescue 995.

Fans of the lovely Jeanette Aw will be excited about her return to local screens after a year’s absence in this challenging new role as a paramedic. Yes, those guys who show up at the scene of an accident or emergency, in the navy uniforms – you know the ones, their ride is an ambulance.

In fact, the entire cast – including Tay Ping Hui, Yvonne Lim, Huang Wenyong and Ben Yeo as fellow paramedics, Pierre Png as a surgeon and Ng Hui as a head nurse – looked right proper and dashing in uniform at yesterday’s press conference.

But it’s all an act. See how unsympathetic they looked when poor Pat Mok (who has a small role as Yvonne’s stepmother) had an “accident”?

Well, at least they bandaged up her boo-boo pretty good. Quite professional, really. As a matter of fact, having been put through their paces for their roles, the cast sometimes forget that they are actors and not medical professionals.

“As a child, I wanted a uniformed job when I grew up,” Yvonne declared, thanking the producers for the opportunity to live her dream through this drama. She was even grateful for the press conference, which gave her the chance to put the navy serge back on. “I couldn’t sleep last night because I was thinking about whether my uniform had been nicely starched! I’m so proud to wear it!”

That’s not all. Yvonne continued, “Now, every time I see an ambulance, I want to rush over to help!” “It’s true,” Ping Hui said, as Wenyong nodded.” Jeanette said: “Yes, because we have real paramedics on the show helping us out as consultants.”

Guess which two hook up?

And, just because it’s Chinese New Year, Yvonne wants you to join them…

…as they administer CPR to some yu sheng.

Catch Rescue 995 starting Feb 6 at 9pm on MediaCorp TV Channel 8. Showbiz Sista, signing out. Live long and pop corn!

Harbin or bust for Chen Tianwen!

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! This is your Showbiz Sista with a bit of cool news for you. Bet you never knew that Chen Tian Wen, last seen playing an authoritative commanding officer of the Singapore Civil Defense Force in the Channel U drama special Mooncake, has a sensitive and artistic side.

In his spare time, the actor has taken up ice-sculpting. And it’s not just a recreational hobby, either. From Jan 10 to 13, Chen will be representing Singapore in the 16th Harbin International Snow Sculpture Competition. We kid you not.

Led by their captain, ice sculptor Jeffrey Ng, last year’s Singapore team of four men placed 10th out of 26 competing teams from around the world in the competition with their Merlion sculpture. This year, they are aiming for a spot in the top three, and to this end, have invited Chen to sculpt alongside them.

Chen revealed that he had been taking ice-sculpting lessons once a week for three months now. “We are preparing to enter a sculpture of a tropical rainforest,” he said.

Besides polishing up his skills, Chen is excited about travelling to Harbin. “This will be my first time visiting a place with such cold weather. I’m a little afraid of the freezing temperatures! I’m excited about the trip and looking forward to it, but I also think it will turn out to be totally unexpected.”

Good luck, Tian Wen! Showbiz Sista, signing out. Live long and pop corn!

Gong xi fa cai from Zoe and Terence

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! This is your Showbiz Sista already sounding the gong for Chinese New Year! Yes, we here in the media industry work months in advance, which is why the press conference for Channel 8′s CNY-themed drama, Double Bonus, was held this week. Complete with a real live lion dance.

In Double Bonus, Ah Jie Zoe returns to our screen — hooray! — as Terence Cao’s put-upon wife, who’s made to play pre-fairy-godmother Cinderella by her in-laws, Chen Shucheng and Zhu Mimi. Hong Kong’s Tom Price also stars as an American who moves to Singapore because he’s interested in Chinese culture. He also becomes interested in Tracy Lee. Meanwhile, Zhang Yaodong plays Terence’s brother, and Michelle Chia his scheming wife.

Now, here’s the twist — get this — Zoe becomes possessed by the God of Beauty, while Tom gets possessed by the God Of Fortune — both of whom happen to be pre-pubescent boys (don’t ask). This involves the two actors having full license to act like children.

“I’m naughty sometimes, too,” said Zoe, with a gleam in her eye.

Terence snorted. “I’ve acted opposite her for decades, and I can safely say that the naughty her is the real her! In her real life, she’s actually been acting all this while!”

So, I guess, if you want to see the real Zoe, you should tune in to Double Bonus, which premieres Jan 3 at 9pm on MediaCorp TV Channel 8. Showbiz Sista, signing out. Live long and pop corn!

It takes two to tango: Xiang Yun and Zhu Hou Ren!

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! This is your Showbiz Sista with a real doozy for you stargazers today. We got front-row tickets to a dance class specially conducted for hot mama Xiang Yun and silver fox Zhu Hou Ren.

The acclaimed veteran actors were getting into character for the drama Pillow Talk, which began filming recently and will air in April. Pillow Talk is a spin-off of 2007’s Mars Vs Venus and takes up the topic of marriage, married life, and marital issues. Joanne Peh and Pierre Png also star as a newly-hitched couple.

Because Hou Ren plays a dance instructor and Xiang Yun his student, the pair is being put through the paces by professional coaches Richard Tang and Sephine Tan. This was only their second lesson – and the tango and the rumba are no easy tasks for rank beginners.

Check out their nifty moves.

Catch Pillow Talk starting April 3 on MediaCorp TV Channel 8. Showbiz Sista, signing out. Live long and pop corn!
