8D8 (Atedeate) was a thin, skull-faced droid who worked in the Cyborg Operations division of Jabba the Hutt's court. The piston-legged automaton was employed to torture both droids and organics. He answered to the sadistic taskmaster, EV-9D9.
From the Expanded Universe
Once in Jabba's employ, Atedeate was lobotomized and reprogrammed. This is not the first retrofit that the droid had undergone, since he was modified to function as a starship maintenance droid previous to his service under EV-9D9. 8D8 secretly loathed the overseer droid.
The 8D8 series was designed by the Verpine Roche hive to work in smelting factories. They are tough and rugged droids whose personalities tend to be crude and simple. The 8D8 units resent being inferior to droids with greater intellectual capacity, and occasionally bully them when possible.
Behind the Scenes
8D8 was realized as a puppet in
Return of the Jedi. His body structure is the same as BG-J38, a slot-playing mantis-headed droid also lurking in the background of Jabba's palace.
