Dead Space 2 ships nearly 2 million units

Visceral's horror survival game almost double-platinum one week after shipping for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC; outselling original 2-to-1

Last week, Electronic Arts shipped Dead Space 2, the sequel to its acclaimed 2008 horror survival game. Like its predecessor, the game received stellar reviews from critics. However, unlike its forebearer, which debuted to middling sales, there is little question about it being a runaway hit.

In a conference call with analysts following EA's holiday-quarter earnings report, executives discussed some aspects of current-quarter performance. Chief operating officer John Schappert said that in just one week, Dead Space 2 has shipped nearly 2 million units to stores--and is outselling the original on a 2-to-1 basis. For reference, the original Dead Space took eight months to sell through 1.4 million units.

Developed by internal studio Visceral Games, Dead Space 2 follows the further adventures of Isaac Clarke, the engineer hero of the first game. After battling the mutating zombielike necromorphs on a deep space mining vessel, Clarke finds himself inside The Sprawl, a huge metropolis anchored to one of Saturn's moons. Things quickly go south, however, once the necromorphs ravage the city, forcing Isaac through an outer space maze filled with the menacing creatures.

Yeah Dead Space 2 is not doubt one of the best videogame experiences I have had for a long time. I best it last night and was very pleased about the ending and the little teaser on the 3rd one. I cant wait to find out where the game is heading to next! The only thing I didnt like was that they changed the look of Nicole (Isaac's gf). Nicole in the first Dead Space is SO MUCH cuter and hotter then the Nicole from Dead Space 2. She looks like a freakin old women in the 2nd one.

Im surprised the first one didn't do so well, cause it was ****ing awesome!, and Dead space 2 is no different, I'm glad they're doing well, EA deserves it.

When I first played Dead Space I played for about 20 minutes and turned it off for half a year, refusing to play it because it scared the hell out of me. When I finally got back into it I realized how amazing it was and played 'till I got that damn Platinum trophy. The challenge that Dead Space 2 faces is that I, along with anyone that loved the original, was excited as hell to jump in and see what would happen next. I believe that people that missed the original and play the sequel will be scared as hell while they play. And upon completion of Dead Space 2, they may try the original and form opinions opposite to those that thought the first one was scarier.

When played on the toughest difficulties (or hardcore), Dead Space 2 is absolutely survival horror. Ammo is very limited, necros take many shots, and many times the best option is to run away bravely.

This game can be sadistic, and I love it.

    @Jbul

Calling Dead Space 2 a survival horror game is like calling RE4 and RE5 survival horror games. Survival horror is about having limited resources and having to decide whether or not you will have to fight an enemy or run away in terror. Considering Dead Space 2 is based very heavily on combat and action, I'd classify it as more of an action horror game.

That being said, Dead Space 2 is an awesome game with a very well-crafted story which serves as a more than worthy follow-up to it's predecessor. It deserves these sales.

Good job EA; this is what happens when you invest in new IP's. Dead Space deserves every success it gets. Bravo EA for not abandoning it when the first didn't perform as it should've commercially.

Just ordered my copy yesterday. I'm glad EA gave these developers a third chance to continue with such a great IP with an excellent story and stellar presentation, where the first game and the Wii game didn't do too well. The first game was one of my all time favorites and I'm sure this game will not disappoint. Here's looking forward to a sequel.

Great single player game. Multi was really underated by reviewers who are to used to Call of Duty and Halo. Multi player is intense constant action.

... pretty sure the MP didn't help as much as some people and reviewers imagine in this sales. With the greatness of the first one and the quality of an horror game that feels more like an adventure (but stepped in the right direction) such as this sequel, this has to happen. Proves me that the customers side of this market isn't lost at all

2million units sold. One unit of them was a preorder mestake as i pre orded it twice lol. But still awsome game im on chapter 9. Seems abit easier then the first. The DRM on the PC also only lets you install and uninstall the game 5 times only. Think thats abit harsh.

Great message for all the publishers to push new IPs, even when the first part doesn't sell as expected. Mirrors Edge 2 anyone?

  • Reilly86

    Posted Feb 2, 2011 12:56 am PT

I thought the first game was brilliant and showed Capcom how to make a 21st century horror game (Sorry Resi 5 fans but that was rubbish) and number two just keeps getting better and better the more I play.

I have currently just entered the playschool area and without giving any spoilers away it is the best part so far and the fear is in full swing with added creepy music. Never again will I be able to hear a music box and not be a little intimidated by it! But I do feel that the first game was scarier.

Im glad that EA released Dead Space and not Activison as they would have killed it off after the first game. EA gave it a chance and now its paying off dividends. Well done Visceral for creating such a great horror game and credit to EA who changed their evil ways.
