Point Loma Lighthouse, built in 1854, was one of the first of eight West Coast
lighthouses. They were all built in Cape Cod style. The lighthouse continued
in use until 1891, when the new Pelican Point lighthouse began operating.

Cabrillo National Monument commemorates the voyage of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo,
the European Explorer moored off the California only 50 years after Columbus
landed in the Americas and claimed the land for Spain.

The steep Bayside Trail is east of the Cabrillo National Monument. It features
coastal sage, wildlife, migratory birds and a panoramic view of San Diego
Bay.

1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo led the first European expedition to explore
what is now the West Coast. He first stepped on land at San Diego Bay on September
28 at Ballast Point.
