Virtue/Moir teamed up in 1997. They are the first North American ice dancers to win the Olympic gold medal. They are also the first Canadian ice dancers to win the ISU World Junior Championships (in 2006). Moir's elder brother Danny competed at the international junior level as well and now coaches. His mother is a skating coach and his father played hockey. The couple missed the ISU Grand Prix Series in 2008 as Virtue suffered from chronic exertional compartment syndrome on both shins, underwent surgery in September and was off the ice until beginning of December 2008.
