Nuggets-Celtics Preview

The Boston Celtics faced some of the top teams in the Western Conference on their recent road trip. They return home to face another.

The Celtics begin a season-high six-game homestand Wednesday when they take on the Denver Nuggets, who will be without coach George Karl for a while as they try to maintain the No. 2 seed in the West.

Boston (45-25) is closing in on a third straight Atlantic Division title and battling Atlanta for one of the top three seeds in the Eastern Conference. It returns home after a successful road trip, which included wins over Houston and Dallas.

The Celtics almost completed a sweep of the stretch before giving up a 12-point first half lead in a 110-97 loss to Utah on Monday, which snapped a four-game winning streak.

Boston was ahead by five after the first half, but Utah went on a 9-0 run to start the third quarter and took control by outscoring the Celtics 33-19 in the period. Paul Pierce also cooled off after averaging 28.0 points in the previous three games. He shot 3 for 11 from the field, finishing with 11 points and six rebounds.

"We were kind of reacting to everything they were doing and then before you know it we were down," said Ray Allen, who scored 15 points.

It was the first time in five games the Celtics allowed an opponent to reach 100 points. They have the second-best scoring defense in the NBA, holding opponents to 94.4 points per game.

Boston also struggled to contain the Nuggets the last time the two met. Denver (47-24) shot 51.3 percent in the 114-105 victory Feb. 21.

While the Celtics will try to get their defense back on track, they will also be looking to improve on some inconsistencies at home. They are 21-12 at TD Garden this season after going 35-6 in 2008-09.

It won't be easy though. Boston's first five games of this homestand are against Western Conference teams before it closes the stretch against East-leading Cleveland on April 4. The Celtics have won their last three games at home and eight of 12.

Denver, meanwhile, comes in trying to avoid a third consecutive loss after falling 109-104 to the Knicks on Tuesday.

It was the eighth straight game Adrian Dantley coached the Nuggets, who announced that George Karl will not return until April as he continues treatment for throat cancer. Denver is 5-3 in those games.

Carmelo Anthony scored 36 points and Chauncey Billups had 25, but the Nuggets allowed the Knicks to close the third quarter on an 11-0 run and never recovered.

It was a tough way to open a five-game road trip for the Nuggets, especially since it now becomes more difficult. Their next four opponents are playoff contenders, and they won't face a team with a losing record until a home game against the Los Angeles Clippers on April 3.

"I think this is probably our most disappointing loss this season because it just means so much," Billups said.

Denver is tied with Dallas for the No. 2 seed in the West, and it has a one-game lead over Utah in the Northwest. Monday's loss dropped the Nuggets below .500 on the road (17-18).

Kenyon Martin missed his ninth consecutive game with patella tendinitis. He remains day to day.

Celts pull together to hold off Nuggets, clinch playoff spot

BOSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- It seems as though most Boston Celtics home games get touch-and-go in the second half, no matter how big a lead they had earned. And until recently, a lost lead would almost always become a lost contest.

But Wednesday night against the Denver Nuggets, when the Celtics squandered a 20-point third quarter advantage, they responded with force, burying the Nuggets in the fourth almost as quickly as their lead had eroded. The result was a 113-99 victory, which clinched a spot in the playoffs.

For much of the first three quarters, the Nuggets looked anything but on their game. The absence of Kenyon Martin was killing them in the middle -- they allowed 58 points in the paint -- they weren't challenging shots, they were allowing the third-worst offensive rebounding team in the league to collect second-chance points and overall just appeared ready for the regular season to end.

"Offensive rebounding, second-chance points and points in the paint," Nuggets assistant coach Adrian Dantley said. "We talked about it before the game and that's what happened. They got points in the paint. They out-hustled us."

The 17 offensive rebounds weren't anything to scoff at, but the telling number was Boston's 23 second-chance points, which, along with its inside scoring, powered an offense that scored 119 points per 100 possessions -- a mark that would lead the league.

But Denver is second in that category, and despite its defensive shortcoming, its offense wasn't finished. With Johan Petro proving a poor option, the Nuggets went small, playing Carmelo Anthony at power forward, and started making a run in the last five minutes of the third. Not a "basketball is a game of runs" type of run, but a "Boston is really letting us back in this, so let's go" sort of comeback. By the end of the period, the deficit was down to seven.

Boston answered with a small lineup of its own, playing Rajon Rondo and Nate Robinson in the backcourt. Rondo began the fourth with two assists, a steal and a layup. In less than 90 seconds, the lead was back to 12. Denver didn't get closer than nine the rest of the night.

"We were really stubborn," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "[We] didn't want to go small, we really didn't. But we really had no choice. Fortunately, our last practice, we actually worked on small offense."

Boston's win stood in stark contrast to its loss in Denver on Feb. 21, when the Nuggets mounted a third-quarter offensive that never stopped. In that game, a banged up Paul Pierce shot 2-of-10 for five points. Wednesday, one game after Pierce and Garnett each reached 20 points for the first time since Dec. 4, the pair accomplished the feat once again, with each scoring over 20 in back-to-back games for the first time all season.

"[This is a] completely different team," Rivers said. "Not only for [Pierce]. Defensively, overall, we were just so much better, we were so much more active."

"The Paul Pierce that you saw out in Denver wasn't the Paul Pierce that usually shows up to play," Pierce said. "I've battled through a lot of injuries this year and right now I'm as healthy as I've been."

The minor revelation -- relatively speaking, however -- was Tony Allen, who scored in double-digits (13) for the first time since Feb. 10. Allen, who had been playing five minutes a night in the past seven contests, earned significant playing time in the second and third quarters and made the most of his 19 minutes in shooting 5-of-6 while providing a quick option for Rondo on the break.

Not that he's been complaining about playing time.

"I just look at it like they got a quiet assassin and whenever you all want to unleash him, he's going to be ready," Allen said. "Ain't no frustration over here."

Nor is there frustration with the rest of the team. Keeping with the status quo of the past several months, Rivers again mentioned how they aren't a 48-minute, "every possession" team yet. But when he said it this time, it was a little more forced, as if to imply that, at least, the Celtics are getting closer. With wins in five of their last six and over two Western Conference playoff teams, there's little reason to think they aren't.
