The
scheme will provide 23 new flats. Councillors have insisted
on strict controls to protect the historic water wheel and
mill race on the River Loxley side of the building.
Local
groups objected to earlier schemes which involved three-storey
buildings on the car park, but we did not object to the
new proposals.
The
final scheme will mean a new lease of life for one of the
valley's most important historic buildings, and will spruce
up this important 'gateway' to the Loxley Valley. Planners
have insisted the building is restored to the high standards
laid down in the Loxley Valley Design Statement.
We
believe this shows the value of fighting unsuitable development
in the valley, and holding out for developments that can
genuinely enhance the area.
