The Invitational Sale Celebration
Scottsdale 2007

Joining hosts David and Terry Anne Boggs, a wonderful group of friends sponsored this year’s

Stallion Bar

This generous group included:

  • Magnum Psyche owners: Fernando & Joaquin De Santibanes, Haras Mayed, Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • *Magnum Chall HVP owners:Lucky & Raegan Lurken
  • DA Valentino owners:Dan & Maureen Grossman, Stone Ridge Arabians
  • *Fausto owners: Don & Janey Morse, Oak Ridge Arabians
  • Ryad El Jamaal ownerL Fábio Diniz de Ávila, Haras Vanguarda – Campinas, Brazil
  • *Maddox Van Ryad owners: Jim and Sally Bedeker, Gemini Arabians
  • *HF Mister Chips owners: Phil & Sandy Witter and Sherry Ballah, Live Oak Arabians
  • Legacy of Fame owner: Lady Gina Pelham, Estancia La Catalina - Buenos Aires, Argentina

Guests were treated to gifts of signature labeled wine bottles from: * Fausto, *Maddox, *Van El Rose and Goddess of Marwan.

As has become a Midwest tradition, this annual event again included a silent auction for the benefit of Future for Kids – www.futureforkids.org a charitable mentoring and youth sports camp program. This year’s auction items included an array of products especially for Arabian horse owners with generous contributions from Schneider Saddlery, Barbwire Western Couture and the Arabian Saddle Company. All Midwest guests enjoyed the opportunity to bid on the wine tasting, fine dining and shopping certificates, golf outings and hotel stays at the Ritz and the Phoenician as well as lovely jewelry. An adorable little West Highland terrier puppy donated by Cammie’s Westies charmed the crowd throughout the evening.

Opening entertainment for the Training Centre’s spectacular presentation of Arabian horses drew members of the audience to the dance floor with training for the two-legged crowd. No championship ribbons were presented to those who learned the “Cotton-eye Joe” but a fine time was had by all while the real stars of the evening were behind the scenes preparing to steal the show.

As a prelude to the main presentation, Victor Ricigliano momentarily abandoned his camera and musical direction, to introduce his wife, Lori Ricigliano, riding a beautiful Friesian stallion named Webe owned by Jim and Sally Bedeker .

As David later said, the Boggs family, members of Team Midwest, have always appreciated good horses of any breed, and this presentation proved the truth of that statement once again. Everyone was delighted by dressage maneuvers of this big magnificent black horse and his accomplished rider.

David stepped to the podium to greet the huge crowd accompanied by wife Terry Anne and together they introduced the newest member of the Boggs family, son Jake, born on June 19, 2006. Although this year’s attendance shattered all previous records for the party, Jake was blissfully unaware of his sea of admirers and happily entertained all around him with big smiles.

David called Midwest members Rinaldo Longuini, Gil Valdez, Travis Rice and Jordan Simons on stage to open the presentation of horses, an assembly of the breed’s very best, again in the time-honored tradition that party-goers have come to expect from Midwest. The audience was definitely not to be disappointed with this evening’s spectacular star-studded cast. While blazing fires and torches flamed in the desert night, mares with precious tottering days-old foals at their sides completely captivated the crowd – and challenged handlers and owners Michele and husband David to hang on tight.

A host of rose blanket bedecked champions raced on stage under the direction of Rinaldo, Travis, Jordan and numerous other talented handlers who participate in the massive undertaking of presenting so many horses in one showing.

Following the presentation of the Invitational horses, special guests *Ecaho and *Laheeb thrilled the crowd with their fiery interaction. With stops for carrot munching and considerable fan admiration, *Magnum Chall showed off, followed by Nations, *Fausto and young *Maddox. DA Valentino and Maddox capturing the audience in an amazing display of stallion power and breeding diversity. High-stepping Mister Chips thundered across the stage as the entire presentation drew jaw-dropping approval from the enthusiastic crowd. In grand finale fashion, the greatest stallion of them all, Magnum Psyche, raced across the stage with Gil on the lead to bid the audience goodnight.

And so, another year, another Midwest Scottsdale Event comes to a close, another breeding season begins with hope and promise excitedly on the horizon.

Another reason for resounding confidence in the power of Arabian horses from Around the World to unite people in peace and friendship through mutual admiration of the most beautiful horses in the world.

Love to all,

Team Midwest!

Phoenix magazine and Phoenix Home & Garden Party

Midwest Training Centre was again honored as a party venue for the Valley’s prestigious magazines of Cities West Publishing on Thursday, February 9 th. With 40 years of success, PHOENIX magazine has earned national respect as one of the best city magazines in America. Sister publication, Phoenix Home & Garden, has provided grand ideas for the Southwest home and desert gardening advice for more than a quarter century. This marks the fifth year that the magazine’s advertisers were treated to February evening with Arabian horses at Midwest.

The lush grounds at the Scottsdale farm quickly transform to a festive party scene when the sun goes down. The stately palm trees are wrapped in delicate crystal lights, numerous fire pits blaze and music floats across the broad expanse of lawn. This year’s relaxed party theme featured denim table linens accented with black vases and purple flowers and an abundance of candles, a scene perfectly set for an evening of great food and fun.

A nearly full moon on a clear desert night provided a beautiful backdrop for guests to preview a number of the magnificent Arabians included in the Midwest Invitational Sale III, hosted by David and Terry Anne Boggs. Commentary on Arabian breed and the horses presented during the evening was delivered by the capable Travis Rice, also of Midwest Training Centre.  All the guests were invited to pet and to feed carrots to the gentle Arabian Horses. For some, this was their first opportunity to touch an Arabian horse and their beauty and gentle spirit quickly won over the audience, both young and old alike.  Some of the recent Arabian horse importations from Brazil as well as winners from the Brazilian Arabian Horse Nationals were included in the presentation. Baskets of carrots quickly disappeared as guests took advantage of the opportunity to reward their equine entertainers. True to form, the horses stole the show during the audience hands-on time when all the Arabian personality really came shining through.

At the close of the presentation several members of the audience came forward to say that they had attended each party the magazines have hosted at the farm. They said they considered the annual event among the best parties they ever attend.  In tribute to the quality of the entertainment, guests began asking for invitations to next year’s event even as they departed for the evening.

Dear Friends,

Please find attached a beautiful video of 2005 Brazilian National show.
Our heartfelt thank you to the owners of these champions for your confidence and support of Midwest on this remarkable journey.
Our video is dedicated to the memory of our great friend Dr. Joao Salgado.
Let us bow our heads together in prayer to our lord and ask him to wrap his loving arms tightly around the spirit of our friend and companion. He left us alone on this earth to soon but not before he taught us just how precious life truly is and how kind a stranger can be to people he has never met before. We thank him for his extraordinary care and love of all Arabian horses and to the special attention and comfort he gave to all guests who visited the country he loved most of all...Brazil.

Kind regards,
David

The 2005 Brazilian Nationals . . .

What a BLAST!

Brazil, November, 2005 ~ A history making celebration, underscored by fabulous Brazilian hospitality, honoring some of the world’s most beautiful Arabian horses, and reminding us how blessed we are with the best of friendships, born of our mutual love of the horse.

It was a time for firsts, for camaraderie, and it was a momentous occasion for sellers and purchasers alike. A group of 30 plus Americans arrived in Sao Paulo (many for their first visit abroad) to attend the 2005 Brazilian National Champion Show and enjoy a taste on the world famous Brazilian hospitality!

In the ground breaking tradition that is Midwest’s signature, both *Magnum Chall hvp and *JJ Estrella were exported to Brazil just days earlier, the first of the American horses transported abroad primarily for promoting and supporting the unity of Brazilian and American breeders. For *Magnum Chall hvp, this was a return to the land of his birth, and his reunion with Mr. Jaime Pinheiro, the man that bred him at his Vila Dos Pinheiros Farm. For each of these extraordinary horses, the trip culminated in the achievement of perhaps the most emotionally charged National Championship wins to their credits.

Ultimately, both National Champions will be re-imported to the USA with many new stable mates selected and purchased by the American breeders. But first, the Lurkens want the Brazilian breeders to have the opportunity to use *Magnum Chall in their programs and the Morse’s would like to obtain embryos from *JJ Estrella to remain in Brazil. Both are scheduled to return in time for the 2006 Midwest Scottsdale festivities where celebrations are planned to welcome them home.

Brazilian hospitality is legendary and every year people from all over the world are warmly welcomed, The ABCCA , it’s president Mr. Luciano Cury and his staff created an atmosphere of camaraderie and joy for all foreign visitors attending their show. But this year our great friends pulled out all the stops, putting on one magnificent presentation after another.

The Midwest/ Brazil excursion all began upon our arrival to the city of Reiero Peto on November 10th with an invitation waiting in the hotel rooms to a Hollywood style extravaganza at Mr. Jeremias Martin’s elegant Haras JP farm just out side of the city. Planned as a social evening where visitors could learn about the heritage and history of the Brazilian Arabian horse, it turned into the sale event of the year. Breeders from the countries of USA, Argentina, Belgium, Uruguay, The U.A.E and of course Brazil fell madly in love with Senõr Martin’s exquisite brood mares and couldn’t resist bringing one or two of them home to their own breeding programs.

After the fun filled week of the National show, the President of the Brazilian Arabian Association, Luciano Cury and his wife Vera hosted another dazzling event at their 55,000 acre Haras . All guests were flown to the remote and beautiful mountain location in one of three Bell Jet Ranger helicopters provided for the occasion by the Curys. Once again breeders were able to purchase brood stock and embryo transfer rights to a few of the Cury’s renowned brood mares.

In honor of, *Magnum Chall HVP, one of the great horses he has bred, Mr. Jaime Pinheiro graciously hosted us to lunch and an unparalleled sale presentation of horses at his estate Haras Vila Dos Pinheiros; an extraordinary place, like the backdrop of a fairy tale. It was there that the Lurkens purchased a young colt you will all soon hear about!

One of Midwest’s dearest friends, the world-renowned Arabian breeder and host, Polé Levy, held a grand reunion and sale presentation one poolside evening at his Haras Capim Fino farm, home to many of the leading sires in Brazil.

And our Brazilian spectacular whirl was capped off with kindness when Lenita Peroy invited us to her Haras Mei Lua and gave many a chance to see for the very first time, up close and personal, the legendary *Ali Jamaal and the extraordinary family he has created through Lenita’s guidance.

The friends and members of Midwest were big purchasers and National winners during that magical week in Brazil. Astute buyers, Don and Janey Morse bought the gorgeous young filly *Sashaa lht just hours before she earned the title of Brazilian National Champion Filly from breeder Lady Gina Pelham of Haras La Catalina. In a remarkable achievement, Don and Janey’s national entry’s of *Sashaa, their new young stallion *Fausto and their foundation mare *JJ La Estrella won the Morse family three Brazilian National Halter Championships in one day... and the Morse’s have only been involved with the Arabian horse for two and a half years!

Long time breeder and friend, Rose Taylor made a move similar to the Morse’s when she purchased the lovely Don El Chall daughter, *Fama fa, just weeks before she was named Brazilian National class winner and Reserve Junior National Champion filly. And Rose repeated that acquisition when she bought *Antonella Maclb, who would later become Brazilian Champion two year old and National Reserve Champion Filly. And later that week, Rose purchased the leading producer Fames Delight from Haras Boa Vista.

Jim and Sally Bedeker purchased several beautiful well bred brood mares, a breeding package to the exciting Unanimous National Champion Magnum son, *Fausto, and they partnered with the Lurkens and the Morse’s on the Embryo Transfer rights to the black champion Bey Shah+ daughter, NV Cocoa from Haras Boa Vista.

Lucky and Raegan Lurken purchased a most amazing young son of now National Champion*Magnum Chall hvp out of an exquisite Padrons Psyche daughter from Haras Vila Dos Pinheiros.

Chuck & Erin Hansen on their first visit to Brazil purchased the beautiful western pleasure champion Great Destiny who will remain in Brazil and be presented by Erin in next years National show.

Together with friends, Midwest set an all time record for the purchase in one trip of Brazilian bred Arabian horses. Many of the exceptional mares obtained will be imported to the United States and a few will stay in Brazil to obtain embryos for the continuing contributions of these treasured horses. From beginning to end, a grand time was had by one and all.

Our heartfelt thanks goes to all of the owners of these champions for intrusting them to Midwest on this remarkable journey.

And a heart felt thanks:

Dr. Joao Salgado for his extraordinary care of our horses and to the special attention to the comfort of all guests.
Rinaldo Longuini .....The number #1 trainer in Brazil for preparing and presenting the Midwest horses, to Jordan Simons & Travis Rice, the Best of Team Midwest for all the greatness you bring us. And to Victor & Lori Ricigliano for capturing the special moments on our journey so awesomely on film and video.

And last, but certainly not least, the good Lord above who has blessed our lives by allowing us time with his most precious creature in all the land, the Arabian horse.

Sincerely,

David Boggs

A moment of rest while visiting Haras Boa Vista.

Midwest Salutes the 2005
Canadian National Show Champions!

For Midwest and their extended family, The Canadian Nationals have always been a special show. It all began for the Boggs in 1973 when the then 15 year-old David, leading the family owned stallion Nitness, earned his first National Top Ten Championship. Since that banner moment, David, through the horses––his passion and his career, has piled memory upon memory, sharing triumphs too numerous to list and enjoying a deep and unique camaraderie with the family into which he was born and the added family he has chosen.

Before we dive into the tale of a stellar 2005 Canadian National Show, let’s take a quick look back at a few of the highlights from years gone by….. a nostalgic review.

Canadian Nationals, 1977:
David leads his first Reserve National Champion, the Half-Arabian gelding, F.A. Zud.

Canadian Nationals 1979:
David leads his first National Champion Stallion (Kaborr, owned by Tom and Deedie Wrigley Chauncey) to victory.

Canadian Nationals 1981:
David leads the equine love of his life, *Padron, to the Canadian National Championship in Stallion Halter.

Canadian Nationals 1983:
David leads Walter Mishek’s beautiful Bask Calonett (a granddaughter of *BASK++) to the Canadian National Reserve Championship (and later the U. S. National Championship) in Mare Halter.

Canadian Nationals 1984:
David leads NH Love Potion, another *BASK++ granddaughter, to the Canadian National Reserve Championship in Mare Halter. Two decades later, this mare still holds the record as the highest price mare ever sold at an Arabian horse auction.

Canadian Nationals 1986:
David leads Amber Satin to the Canadian (and U. S.) National Championships in Mare Halter.

Canadian Nationals 1990: Midwest sweeps the Canadian Nationals dashing off with these titles:
Canadian National Champion Stallion, Top Contender
Canadian National Champion Mare, Halana
Canadian National Champion Futurity Filly, Little Liza Fame
Canadian National Champion Futurity Gelding, Alah Garcia
Canadian National Reserve Champion Mare, SS Follow MeCanadian Nationals 1993: David leads Tom Chauncey’s beloved *BASK++ grandson, Kharben to the Canadian (and U.S.) National Championships in Stallion Halter.

Canadian Nationals 1994:
With David, GA Honeysuckl Rose is named Canadian National Champion Mare.

Canadian Nationals 1997:
Europa El Jamaal, with David, becomes the Canadian (and U. S.) National Champion Mare.

Canadian Nationals 1998:
Another pinnacle of success is reached when David leads the magnificent Magnum Psyche to the UNANIMOUS Canadian National Championship in Stallion Halter (at this point, the three year old has already had a stellar career). Two months later, just before David’s 40th birthday, Magnum will become the U. S. National Champion Stallion.

Jump forward to the Canadian Nationals, 2005 . . . another year of firsts and fabulous achievements! Highlights abound, but here are a few for openers:

Terry Anne Boggs wins THREE National Championships in Amateur Halter AND a Top Ten Championship in English!

Gil Valdez wins his FIRST National Championship with Shut Up & Dance!

Rinaldo Longuini wins his first TWO Canadian National Reserve Championships!

Travis Rice wins his first National Top Ten Championship with WH Eagle Bey!

(Jordan Simons did a lot of training and preparation for the show but was off on an air adventure, accompanying our beloved Magnum to Argentina where he’ll breed mares until his return in January. Thanks, Jordan, for taking care of our boy!)

Gil Valdez with Jordan Simons

From David and Terry Anne, a heartfelt thanks to all of our wonderful friends and to the support team without whom we couldn’t have had such an astonishing show. Special thanks to Judi Anderson and Sam Ojeda for keeping the home fires burning and to the Team Midwest members who cared for the horses in Canada:

David, Terry Anne and Olivia Boggs

Before we give in its entirety the astonishing accomplishments of Team Midwest at Canada 05, let’s hear from a few of the people who shared this year’s triumphs.

Kathy Kapell - Nat Champ AOTH Half Arabian Gelding Sparktacular

Kathy Kappel

“It made me cry.” These were the first words out of Kathy’s mouth when asked to share her 2005 Canadian National Show experience.

Kathy, who has been showing horses for 28 years, describes herself as a “one man operation,” which translates to a woman who feeds, conditions and cleans up after her own horses, and loves every minute of it!

So what was it, you may be wondering, that make Kathy cry? The realization of a nearly three decade old heart held dream. In Canada this year, Sparktakular, the Half-Arabian gelding that Kathy bought as a weanling then lovingly raised, earned the titles of Canadian National Champion Stock Type Half-Arabian Gelding AND, Canadian National Champion Half-Arabian Gelding AOTH!

National Champion AOTH Half Arabian Gelding Sparktacular

“David Boggs is the dream maker,” Kathy says. “How do you thank someone who plays such an important part in helping you achieve the dream of a lifetime? I went with Midwest to Canada hoping to enjoy myself and have Sparky win a couple of Top Tens. I never imagined the way it would all turn out.”

“While I was showing Sparky in the AOTH class, Gil Valdez leaned over the rail and told me that there were three National Champions in my class. Now that was scary. I’d been watching the quiet, dignified way Terry Anne shows her horses and I just tried to stay calm, to emulate her style. I guess it worked, although I have to say I don’t make Sparky look good. He makes me look good. What an experience!

“I want to thank not only Daivd, but also Terry Anne and the entire Midwest family. I’ll treasure this memory forever!”

Lucky & Reagan Lurken

Lucky Lurken

“Raegan and I are blessed beyond words,” Lucky says. “You go to a horse show just like everybody else, with hopes and expectations. Sometimes your dreams come true and sometimes they don’t. But what’s been happening with Magnum Chall is just beyond our wildest dreams!

“And Canada is a GREAT place to show horses because the people there are so supportive, so kind. Whether or not you’re winning, they’re always friendly. I love it! And this year, well, what can I say?

“Our emotions about the horses are so strong, so volatile, that this can be a difficult game to play. But David and Terry Anne and all of their team keep things in perspective and help us keep smiling, even through the not so great times. I’ve had my share of disappointments in the show ring and in horse breeding. And I can honestly say that without David and our shared, extended family, I wouldn’t still be involved with the horses.”

What about Magnum Chall, who is now a double National Champion Stallion?

“He is my dream horse,” Lucky says, “the one I’ve been looking for since I first got interested in these great animals. People have asked me if he takes a back seat to his dad, since Magnum is so important to David. I just laugh. Neither David nor Fernando (Magnum’s owner) have ever let Magnum Chall be overshadowed by his sire.

“One of my all-time best memories comes from Scottsdale, 2004, when Magnum Chall was Junior Champion Stallion. After the class, when Fernando congratulated us, he had tears in his eyes . . . tears of joy because he was so blessed, so ecstatic that his stallion had sired a colt as great as Magnum Chall.

“ Thanks to David and Magnum Chall, I know how Fernando feels. We’re seeing such wonderful foals by Magnum Chall! And I’m way more excited for the people who breed their mares to him than I am for our own babies. Maybe that sounds strange, but it means so much to me to have this support from other breeders. I’m endlessly grateful.

“I’ve been blessed so much that no matter what happens now, I can only smile. And there’s one last thing I’ve got to say, if I didn’t own a single horse, had nothing at all to do with horses, David Boggs would still be one of my very best friends.”

Victor Ricigliano

“For us, the Canadian National Show was filled with highlights, but a few stand out. The first that comes to mind is when Kathy Kappel and her horse, Sparktacular, went National Champion in AOTH Halter. Lori and I have been watching Kathy for years. We’ve admired the way she raised Sparky and cared for and conditioned him herself, and believed in him. And we were really glad to see her join the Midwest family only about a month and a half before this big show. Just finding a home with Midwest is a big deal. Winning two National Championships so soon is huge.

“I always sit on the opposite side of the ring from everyone else so that I can take pictures and observe what’s going on. During the amateur classes, I’m always taken by the way David interacts with his amateurs. It’s almost as though he’s standing right next to them in the arena, helping them do what they need to do to get the best possible show from their horses. Watching him with Kathy was really touching.

“When they called out her name, tears just poured down Kathy’s cheeks. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anyone happier at winning. Then, the icing on the cake was when David came back into the ring with Sparky and won the open class. It was altogether wonderful.

“One of the most emotional moments for all of this big, happy Midwest family was when Gil Valdez won his first National Championship with Shut Up N Dance! It would have been great to see him earn that honor no matter who he was showing, but this was EXTRA special because he loves that horse so much!

“That was another happiest ever moment that lasted and lasted. Gil smiled so big when he won, he might have had a coat hanger in his mouth. I never knew he had so many teeth! And he kept that smile for two days at least. Everybody was really happy for him. It was great!

“Then, of course, there was Magnum Chall’s big win. Lucky and Raegan Lurken have to be among the most wonderful people in the world. They own a diamond of the breed and don’t seem to realize it. It’s amazing the way every time Magnum Chall wins they see it as a gift from God. When that horse walks into the arena, it’s like the lights get brighter. So all the rest of us expect him to win. But not Lucky and Raegan, they look astonished every time.

“At Canada, I watched Lucky pacing all through the class. Raegan sat with the rest of the Midwest family being the lady that she is. But Lucky couldn’t sit still. It was like he’d just sent one of his children to perform in his first school play. And for Lucky, it’s not about winning himself, it’s all about everyone who has bred to Magnum Chall, all of those other people who so want the stallion to do well.

These friends beautifully sum up not only this one great show, but the way of life that is Midwest. And now, to top off the tribute, the record . . .

The Midwest Summer Celebration ~ 2005

2005 MIDWEST SUMMER CELEBRATION click to download a video

“I believe that children are our future

Teach them well and let them lead the way . . .”

These words from the song, Greatest Love of All (written by Michael Masser and Linda Creed and performed by Whitney Houston) could have been penned by David and Terry Anne Boggs––loving parents of three daughters who live this simple truth. Most recently, the Boggs philosophy was demonstrated at the Midwest Summer Celebration and Youth day––a gala in the Midwest tradition, a festival that will go down in the annals of Midwest history.

Held on Saturday, June 18th, 2005, at Midwest’s Minnesota home place, the event kicked off the summer season in America’s heartland. Three days in advance of the actual first day of summer, just when the June doldrums threatened summer seekers in the land of a thousand lakes, Sunshine came to the rescue! Following weeks of life giving, while sometimes spirit dampening rain, the clouds parted and the crowd was blessed with absolutely perfect––and perfectly welcome––sunny weather.

The day’s festivities were started with a bang by The Minnesota Half Arabian Horse Youth Association’s Arabian Celebration. In the carnival atmosphere, created by the Association’s Youth Director, Chris Rickart and her volunteers, over 300 people who attended this youth sponsored event were treated to all manner of joy and excitement.

This Arabian Celebration was the first of its kind to be held in Minnesota, and Midwest was chosen as the perfect setting for the inaugural event. The theme Arabians ~You Touch One––You want One was a marvelous success! Young and old alike participated in the many games and horse exhibitions, while they learned about the breed and made new acquaintances. Be sure to visit the “KIDS KORNER” on this web site to learn more about the Youth Group’s fun adventures.

Following the successful Youth event, The Midwest Summer Celebration was introduced with a warm welcome from David and Terry Anne Boggs who invited everyone to enjoy the open horse barns , the fun and the camaraderie for which Midwest is so well known. Then a fabulous presentation of the finest Arabian horses in the world got underway. From bleachers brought in for the occasion, everyone had a bird’s eye view of a spectacular collection.

Adorable young foals danced into the spotlight at their beautiful mother’s sides. Young superstar (or soon-to-be) colts and fillies pranced and preened and showed off for the crowd. Breathtaking mares and stallions were carefully presented, one after another, by trainers, Gil Valdez, Trasvis Rice, Rinaldo Longuini and Jordon Simons to the huge crowd’s cheers and applause!

For the afternoon finale, the awesome Midwest Stallions, Reserve National Champion Stallion JAYDD and his handsome cousin, NATIONS, were presented. Encouraged by their handlers, Gil and Rinaldo, the stallions put on a show. Snorting and blowing, these beauties were as exciting as only a great Arabian stallion can be. Then, in the amazing way of the Arabian, both stallions abandoned their majestic show and blow to cuddle up to young children, nuzzling and gently begging for the sometimes shyly offered tasty carrot treats.

In time honored Midwest custom, it was once again proven beyond a doubt that the Arabian horse is a truly spectacular animal to be loved, enjoyed and embraced by young and old alike. This demonstration was especially significant in view of the fact that the audience included many first time horse enthusiasts, most of whom had never before had the opportunity even to touch a horse before, much less feed one a carrot. In addition to the newcomers, many of the young people who attended the morning’s Arabian Celebration stayed to enjoy the afternoon and evening horse presentations, so they could spend even more time with these beautiful Arabians. The expressions on the faces of the first time carrot feeders and the youngsters who got to see the superstars of the breed they love were sights to behold.

Although it wasn’t easy to break away from the awesome horse exhibition, the delicious aroma of a Western theme Bar-B-Q beckoned the hungry crowd! Prepared by Midwest friends, Brad and Shelly Meyer, tasty pulled pork sandwiches, Bar-B-Q Chicken, and sweet chocolate brownies satisfied everyone in attendance.

To the crowd’s delight, the evening’s festivities were kicked off by one of the stars of the morning’s Youth Celebration who galloped into the outdoor arena decked out in exotic Native Costume. As the dazzling pair charged around the arena, bright lights glinted off of their costume to the many oohs and ahhs of the crowd. Following this exciting display, fun took over when 20 young future equestrians entered the arena on none other than STICK PONIES. At the head of the procession, Gil Valdez wearing a big western hat and a happy grin and riding a donkey led by Lyndsey Boggs, fit right in, even though he was a little older than the rest of the up and coming equestrians. And the crowd went wild with laughter as everyone cantered their STICK PONIES all around the arena!

Rounding out the just-for-fun events of the evening, David’s and Terry Anne’s youngest daughter, that budding musical diva, Miss Emma Boggs, (7) giving a beautiful rendition of the Italian love song That’s Amore, made famous by crooner Dean Martin. There were tears in the eyes of the audience as Emma’s voice rang true, and her smile lit up the night.

After the applause quieted down, the evening presentation of mares and babies began. Twenty Seven offspring of Magnum Psyche, *Magnum Chall hvp, Nations, Legacy of Fame and their dams were presented to an awed crowd. Around the entire outdoor arena there wasn’t a space to be found as everyone gathered around to offer carrots to the adorable foals and elegant mares as they passed by.

Next, one of Midwest’s newest super stars, the recent National Champion Brazilian import, *JJ Apharina was presented. With the moonlight reflecting off of her silver mane and tail, this exotic mare appeared as though a mythical apparition in the night.

The evening presentations continued as the 2005 Midwest Show String horses were perfectly presented one after another. Then, the arena was cleared and the music surged toward crescendo. Back lit by the show barn, a silhouette of horse and handler was seen walking regally forward. The crowd’s applause was almost deafening as Magnum Psyche, led by his longtime friend, Gil Valdez, gained momentum and finally burst into the arena.

There was no way to miss how much this extraordinary stallion enjoyed putting on a show for the crowd, and, of course, partaking of his favorite carrot treats, offered by loving fans from baskets placed with care all around the arena.

The epitome of Arabian equine perfection, Magnum, *Magnum Chall, Legacy of Fame and DA Valentino ––dignified, kind, too magnificent for words––were led by the Midwest handlers from person to person around the arena, where they said hello to old friends and introduced themselfs to new admirers. One never ceases to be amazed at how the Arabian horse can elicit so much emotion and create such impact. Among this crowd, many wiped away tears of joy as they petted or hugged the beautiful stallions. Some were speechless. Others simply smiled and shook their heads in wonder. And Magnum and the Midwest stallions, taking it all in stride, strutted and pranced, and graciously offered thier gentle beauty to everyone whose good fortune it was to share that space in time.

In a tribute to the assembled friends, the glorious Arabian horse, and the Country we all love, a thundering display of magnificent fireworks lit up the dark Minnesota Sky. Explosions of red, white and blue, as unique and as beautiful as the horses that had been shared with the crowd throughout the day, capped off the Midwest Summer Celebration and Youth day.

Deep into the night, the revelry continued with dancing, singing, camaraderie and more fun. All in all, it was a wonderful way to enjoy the Arabian horse and the friends brought together by this most glorious of God’s creatures.

See ya next year and we’ll do it all again!

Boggs Kids Take Home Roses From 2005 Youth National Championships

It was their very first Youth National Championship Show and Courtney and Lyndsey Boggs and their cousins Austin and Olivia were more than a little nervous and excited. Austin Boggs was the first in the halter arena on Tuesday morning with the beautiful OO Ive Been Spotted, in the Half-Arabian Stock-Hunter Gelding Halter class. The class was large and very competitive boasting the likes of previous national champions, but Austin and the handsome Pinto had a stellar class. Austin left the ring galloping with the first National Championship of the day, his first ever, and found it to be both a very exciting and a very emotional moment for he and his family.

The next class in the ring was Lyndsey Boggs leading the Versace daughter ZA Primaverah to her fist National Championship honor in the Half-Arabian Stock-Hunter Mares. The entire Boggs clan ran into center ring for the National Championship winning photograph. Then the announcer said, You folks may as well stay in the ring, because the 2005 Youth Reserve National Champion Half-Arabian Stock-Hunter Mare is DR Gilty Pleasures and Austin Boggs! Two classes later, young Austin was back again in center ring with mom & dad to receive the rose garland and National Champion trophy in the Saddle-Pleasure Gelding Halter with aunt Terry Annes gelding Shut Up And Dance.

The halter competition wasnt the only place the Boggs kids made their presence known during the 2005 Youth National Show. Courtney Boggs and her handsome Pinto friend, Prince of Thieves made the finals in the ultra competitive Half-Arabian Saddle Seat Equitation Walk-Trot 10 & Under. The week climaxed for the Boggs family with Courtney and Prince turning in a terrific ride in the Tingley Arena on Saturday morning. (Special thanks to her equitation coaches, Bob Battaglia and Russ Vento).

And Olivia Boggs jogged off with a US Top Ten western pleasure walk/trot with the sweetest smile one could imagine!

The youth AHA Parties, get-togethers, dances, dog races, parades and lots of practice and outstanding competition, it was a great first Youth Nationals for the Boggs kids and our congratulations and thanks to the staff of AHA, Your show is amazing!. And next year, watch for Emma Boggs to add her talents and zeal to this stellar mix of youngsters. Look out Arabian Show Horse World, the next generation of Boggs showmen and women is just stepping on stage and into the spotlight!

Team Midwest Returns in Triumph To the
Ohio Buckeye Sweepstakes

By Jo West Lauter & Linda Buss

According to legend, the holding of a “buckeye nut” in one’s pocket promises good luck . . .

The warm spring weather and the Midwestern Arabian horse people gave Team Midwest a warm welcome on the occasion of their return to the Buckeye.

Several members of the extended family known as Midwest attended the 42nd Annual Buckeye Show from all parts of the globe. Among these great friends of the Arabian horse, and of one another, were: Fernando de Santibanes of Argentina, owner of International leading sire, AND Buckeye 2005 Leading Sire, Magnum; Jeff & Richard Sloan with their champion filly *HED Caramba, Lucky and Raegan Lurken, proud owners of the Buckeye Grand Champion Stallion *Magnum Chall. Don and Janey Morse carried home the roses for Buckeye Grand Champion Mare JJ La Estrella, Rose Taylor and Patti Kossman celebrated Champion honors with RA Miracles, Forbidden Love and GAA Millennia. And, a large contingent of Terry Anne Boggs’ family came from New York to cheer her and her daughters on in their amateur halter championship victories!

Many attended for first time. For veterans and newcomers alike, the Ohio Buckeye has definitely been added to the list of must attend shows!

A record 625 horses vied for top honors in the best of competition. These beautiful animals were accompanied by owners and trainers who came to celebrate and enjoy the continuation of one of the world’s most prestigious Arabian horse events.

For his own re-entrance into the Buckeye winner’s circle, David Boggs presented the big four halter winners:

• Buckeye Grand Champion Stallion, Magnum Chall HVP
(by Magnum, owned by Lucky and Raegan Lurken)

(The 2004 U. S. National Champion Junior Stallion)

• Buckeye Grand Champion Mare, JJ Estrella
(by Magnum, owned by Don and Janey Morse)

• Buckeye Junior Champion Colt, DA Valentino
(by Versace, owned by Dan and Maureen Grossman)

(The 2004 U. S. National Champion Sweepstakes Colt)

• Buckeye Junior Champion Filly, HED Caramba
(by Magnum, owned by Jeff Sloan)

The 42nd Anniversary Buckeye Sweepstakes not only provided all those who attended a chance to enjoy a terrific horse show, it also gave Midwest an opportunity to celebrate their return by hosting a luncheon on the lawns on Saturday afternoon in the Midwest tradition. To the delight of all the guests, Midwest also presented a small number of sale horses, as well as the magnificent stallions, Legacy of Fame (owned by Ron & Judy Schmid) and *Magnum Chall HVP (owned by Lucky and Raegan Lurken).

True to the good luck promise of the buckeye nut, the rain held off until after the presentation, came back for a while, then let up again in time for Midwest’s traditional evening fiesta, abounding, as always, with great food, music, dancing and karaoke.

For proud dad, David’s youngest daughter––the budding musical diva, Miss Emma Boggs, gave a beautiful rendition of the song “That's Amore” made famous by Dean Martin. There’s no way to adequately describe the pride in David's eyes. You had to be there to get the full impact.

Not to be out done by a 7-year-old, the self-acclaimed rock star Don Morse, took to the karaoke microphone, accompanied by Terry Anne and Courtney Boggs, Linda Lane, and Susie Boggs. And a grand time was had by one and all!

The Buckeye has traditionally served as the “proving grounds” for the U.S. Nationals winners. In RESULTS, Christy Egan had this to say:

“More than ever the winners at the 2005 Buckeye Show will be the “ones to beat” at the Youth and Open National Championships, and the NSH Finals later on this year and in years to come.”

At the 2005 Buckeye Sweepstakes, young Lyndsey Boggs proved herself and her horses on her way to Youth Nationals, winning with Ames Major and WH Eagle Bey. Way to go Lyndsey.

Midwest congratulates all the winners at the Ohio Buckeye and salutes their champions and owners one list attached here.

Magnum Celebrates his Tenth Birthday with Family & Friends.

Happy Birthday Magnum!

A Celebration of Ten Glorious Years

A decade . . . a milestone

On Saturday May 14 th, at Midwest, a group of close friends celebrated a decade in the life of a great horse. As Magnum turned ten, we paid tribute to the astonishing effect he has already had on the Arabian breed and the people who love it, touching so many lives in a powerful, positive way. This evening honored the friendship, the family and the love that evolves around Magnum, who stands today at the forefront of the most beautiful breed of horse in the world.

In ten short years, Magnum has enjoyed such extraordinary success as a show horse and sire that he has achieved a kind of mythical status. It’s almost as though this living legend has been with us forever.

Magnum set and holds the record as Multi-National Champion and International Champion Stallion. As the leading halter sire in the Arabian breed, Magnum has achieved––in the first ten years of his life––what few horses ever attain, immortality through his offspring and their accomplishments.

At the celebration hosted by Fernando & Joaquin de Santibanes and David and Terry Anne Boggs, a gathering of friends was treated to an elegantly prepared dinner, complete with live music, horse presentations, dancing, a musical slide show and the much anticipated premier of the Magnum video.

The highlight of the evening came when Magnum was brought out to the crowd’s boisterous singing of Happy Birthday Magnum. The stallion of the hour enjoyed all of the attention. He even “sampled” his birthday cake; but quickly decided that the many offered carrots were much more to his taste!

Toasts and heartfelt memories were offered by many of Magnum’s friends and admirers. World renowned breeder Roxann Hart of Rohara Arabians, reminisced and expressed her gratitude about how powerfully this single horse has impacted her life and her breeding program.

Walter Mishek of the Arabian Horse Times made an emotional toast. “The Arabian Horse is family,” he said. “Family is comprised of blood, but sometimes Family is comprised of love. Tonight it is comprised of Love.”

The celebration continued, as guest after guest had their pictures taken with the Birthday Boy. When Vicki Humphrey’s daughter, Jessica Clinton, spontaneously jumped on Magnum and rode him around bareback, the entire crowd was surprised and dazzled!

As the band played late into the night, Magnum quietly retired to his stall. On this, like other nights, the glorious chestnut stallion contentedly munched on his fragrant alfalfa, stopping occasionally to listen to the sounds of a sleepy horse barn. As he so often does, he nickered softly now and then to a favorite mare stabled close by, then listened for her reassuring response.

On the surface Magnum’s soft manner and quiet dignity appear to be in stark contrast to the monumental impact he continues to have on the Arabian breed and on hundreds of people involved with these horses. But this seeming incongruity is just one more facet in the mystery that is Magnum–– the horse of the new millennium.

So it was that on that festive night in May, the gentle spirit of a horse whose greatness has touched so many drew us even closer to one another and reminded us what a gift the horse is from a loving God. It was truly a spiritual evening––a moving affair in honor of a remarkable friend.

Happy Birthday, Dear Magnum

The 50 th Anniversary.

Midwest & Scottsdale …
Great Times & New Records Celebrated and Remembered.

Team Midwest kicked off the 2005 show season by watching and enjoying the inaugural show ring careers begin in Scottsdale for yet another generation of Boggs family horsemen. . . . As we celebrated with old friends and new the Golden Anniversary of the Scottsdale All-Arabian Horse Show this year, we shared memories of joyous moments and were reminded of the love that has held us all together across the miles and through the years. Our friend, Jo West Lauter (J. L. Hardesty) penned a special recollection that we’d like to share with you now. We hope it makes you smile. We hope it brings back a few joyful Scottsdale memories of your own.

Midwest and Scottsdale.....through the years.

© J. L. Hardesty

Thirty years ago a handsome teenager from America’s heartland dashed into the Scottsdale All Arabian Horse Show arena for the first time. It was 1975.

638 horses were entered in the 20 th annual Scottsdale competition that, even then, out shined every other event of its kind. That year, David Boggs, an exuberant 17 year-old athlete from Elk River Minnesota, took his first run at the big time and initiated a metamorphosis in the way Arabian halter horses would be shown from then on.

A junior in high school in 1975, David had, two years earlier, presented his first National winner. But in his memory, that experience pales in comparison to the feeling of “winning the world and beyond” that overcame him at Scottsdale.

Up until then, David & his style of halter presentation had been seen almost exclusively in the Midwest. There was enormous participation each February in Scottsdale by Arabian breeders and enthusiasts from California, Oregon, Washington and Texas, where the horse population was among the Nation’s highest. Add to this the fact that aficionados from all points east were beginning to feel the pull of both climate and the gathering of the breed’s best horses, and you have the stage as it was set for Midwest’s auspicious entrance.

Like big screen hopefuls of a bygone era discovered when they just happened to be sitting in the right corner drug store at the right time, David swept into Scottsdale on the wave of hope that carried us through the 1970’s where he met a new friend and mentor, the industry magnate Mr. Tom Chauncey and the leading marketer of the breed Mr. Gene LaCroix. And like those aforementioned movie stars, was duly discovered! In the thirty years since his Scottsdale debut, David and Midwest have become as much a mainstay and pillar of the Arabian horse show scene in Scottsdale––indeed, the world over ––as are the horses they love so dearly.

Over the years, David, his brother Bob, and a line up of Midwest assistants that reads like the who’s who of Arabian halter trainers, have led an astonishing number of Scottsdale Champions. In so doing, Team Midwest has set Scottsdale records that only they, themselves, have managed to upset . . . and sometimes best. Too many fine horses to list in this short space have danced to the disco beat of the Boggs showmanship, running with the wind beside the brothers Boggs into the Scottsdale winner’s circle. An eclectic mix, these champions have had two things always in common, exceptional individual quality and excellence of presentation.

Since the early 1970’s, Scottsdale has been THE place where the serious Arabian horse enthusiast comes to make breeding decisions and to purchase the breed’s finest horses. For a quarter of a century, Midwest has been among the most successful marketers of both breedings and horses. Unfortunately there’s not room in this venue to list his myriad accomplishments, but a few highlights must be mentioned. It was, for instance, a David Boggs client who purchased the all time high selling mare NH Love Potion at auction via a LaCroix/Lasma/Scottsdale Sale in 1984 for $2,550,000. In Scottsdale, David brought together the group of general partners to purchase the National Champion super star *Padron from Lasma for the staggering sum of nearly $5 million dollars only later to complete the largest syndication in history for an Arabian stallion at $11,000,000.

To Scottsdale, David brought the buyer of two-time National Champion Mare Amber Satin––a mare he would later re-sell to Paolo Gucci for $650,000. And more recently, in Scottsdale, David sold *Magnum Chall hvp (the reigning 2004 U. S. National Champion Junior Stallion, and look a like son of Magnum Psyche now a multi-million-dollar horse) to friend and client, Lucky Lurken. And the 2005 Midwest Invitational sale toppers included such greats as National Champions JJ La Estrella & Gaa Millennia, This years Scottsdale Champion yearling filly Mattahari and the highly touted and beautiful yearlings Falcons Lovesong and the imported *Gazal son *Erte. And setting an all time record was the breeding right to Magnum Psyche donated by Haras Mayed to the Scottsdale Signature Breeders program and auctioned off Wednesday evening at the show at $30,000 to happy buyer Mr. Craig Hart of San Diego CA.

Even more importantly Midwest has led the way to a continuing prosperous Arabian horse market place via annual private treaty sales, seminars and presentations focusing not only on the breed’s finest halter and breeding horses, but also expanding and encouraging the immeasurably important amateur and youth markets.

But wait! There’s more. This year, exactly three decades after their dad presented his first Scottsdale Champion, the ten-year-old Boggs twins Courtney and Lyndsey and their seven-year-old sister, Emma, will make their own Scottsdale debuts. So it begins again. A new anniversary is established and memories are made via this celebration of the Arabian horse where friends and family meet each year in the “Valley of the Sun” to share a one of a kind love affair. And so it was . . . and is . . . and will always be.

Team Midwest is a family extended well beyond the usual boundaries of blood and time and place. Our hearts remain always open. We invite you to join us!

At Scottsdale 2005 Team Midwest earned:

10 Championships or Reserve Championships

 9 Scottsdale First Place Awards

 5 Scottsdale Second Place Awards

Scottsdale Top Ten Awards
