Beattie flags Steve Irwin award, national park

Queensland's Premier Peter Beattie says Steve Irwin may have an award or a national park named after him.

The 44-year-old wildlife crusader was killed while filming a documentary off the far north Queensland coast yesterday.

Irwin was swimming above a stingray when it lashed out, piercing his chest with the barb on its tail.

Mr Beattie says the Irwin family is still being consulted about a permanent memorial.

"We want to find a fitting tribute," Mr Beattie said.

"We can do all sorts of things like name a national park, we could have particular awards, all sorts of things."

The Irwin family is also being consulted about a public funeral service.

Mr Beattie says he will talk further with the family before making any decisions.

Traffic affected

Meanwhile, the volume of people visiting Australia Zoo to pay their respects to Irwin has been affecting traffic on the Sunshine Coast for most of the day.

Police have reduced the speed limit on the Glass House Mountains Road and advised motorists to expect delays.

Floral tributes are continuing to mount at the gates of the wildlife park.
