Chambers takes Greene scalp
Dwain Chambers (left) races to victory in Oslo
Chambers holds on ahead of Greene and Montgomery

Dwain Chambers has scored the most impressive victory of his career by beating top US sprinters Maurice Greene and Tim Montgomery in Oslo's Golden League meeting.

The Briton managed to chase down Olympic and world champion Greene even though the American made a better start.

The win caps a superb few days for Chambers, who captained the British team to a fifth European Cup success in Annecy last weekend.

Chambers, the fastest man in Europe this year, coped better with the cold conditions and won in the unofficial time of 10.05seconds.

Now I really do believe in myself - I am coping with the mental and physical pressures much better

Greene was 0.01secs behind, while Olympic runner-up Montogomery clocked 10.10secs.

Greene said: "I'm not taking anything away from Dwain. He was better prepared than me and fully deserved the victory.

"He's getting better and better. I can't be mad with myself - he ran so well."

Chambers said: "It was a case of being close to him in mid-race. I've now got new horsepower after working on my weaknesses.

"I thought to myself I will not let the guy get away from me.

"Now I really do believe in myself. I am coping with the mental and physical pressures much better. I'm just beginning to warm up for the rest of the year.

Marion Jones crosses the line in Oslo
Jones was too good for her rivals
"In fairness he's had a nine-hour flight to come here and only been here for a couple of days. For me it was just a two-hour journey."

Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj set the fastest time in the world this year as he outclassed a strong field to win the Dream Mile.

The three-times world 1,500 metres champion ran the final lap alone to finish in three minutes 50.12 seconds.

Another star name also lived up to her billing - three-times Olympic gold medallist Marion Jones cruised to victory in the women's 100m.

Jones clocked 10.96secs despite a slow start to beat Jamaica's Tanya Lawrence and fellow American Chryste Gaines.

With no major championships this year Jones will attempt a sweep of the Golden League sprints, although she played down the chances of winning all seven.

"I'm not really thinking about that just now," she said.

"I'm just extremely pleased with this time, although I've always said the important thing is to win the race."

Gail Devers romped to victory in the 100m hurdles from Jamaica's Bridgette Foster in a time of 12.53secs, just outside the best time in the world this year, which she set in California last week.
