Halo movie indefinitely postponed
Following collapse of studio backing and a proposed third rewrite, work on big-screen adaptation of sci-fi shooter phenomenon is stopped.
At the end of September, the Halo movie seemed to be right on track. Its executive producer, Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, had been a featured speaker at Microsoft's X06 event in Barcelona, Spain. There, he talked up the multimillion-dollar sci-fi epic, which was being directed by novice Neill Blomkamp from a script by Alex Garland (28 Days Later) and D.B. Weiss.
What a difference a month makes. Earlier this month, Universal and Fox--the two Hollywood studios cofinancing the project along with Microsoft--backed out of the project after failing to renegotiate the profit-sharing scheme for the film. It had been slated for a summer 2008 release.
Despite the setback, Microsoft put on a brave face. "Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and the rest of the creative team are dedicated to ensuring the Halo movie becomes a reality," the company said in a statement on October 20. "We are already in discussions with potential partners who recognize the value of the Halo brand and its appeal to consumers worldwide."
Apparently the aforementioned discussions didn't go so well. This week, WingNut Films, Jackson's production company, announced that the release of Halo has been pushed back indefinitely. "At this time Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, along with Microsoft, have mutually agreed to postpone making a feature film based on the Halo video game universe until we can fulfill the promise we made to millions of Halo fans...of bringing a first class film to the big screen," read a statement sent out to numerous media outlets by WingNut.
Jackson and Walsh confirmed that Blomkamp would remain on board, praising him as a "tremendously gifted filmmaker" and calling his work on the project "truly awe-inspiring." However, the WingNut statement gave no date for the Master Chief's big-screen debut. "While it will undoubtedly take a little longer for Halo to reach the big screen, we are confident that the final feature film will be well worth the wait," read the statement.
While Blomkamp is sticking with Halo, neither Garland nor Weiss are currently involved with the project. According to the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, the film's script was being rewritten for a third time by Josh Olson, who received a 2006 Academy Award nomination for penning A History of Violence.

haloguy888, at least the metal gear solid movie isnt indefinately postponed. and even if they were both released at the same time, i bet mgs would be a lot better, because it has more room to manuver story-wise. halo has one of the worst stories ever. period.
When this movie is created, it would be way better than the Meta Gear Solid movie. XD
Uwe Boll...please don't say that...
Besides, in all honesty, Uwe Boll will probably never be given a video game to adapt to the movies. Ever....unless it's something as ridiculous as Postal 2 or Fuzion Frenzy. Even better, imagine something like a Barbie game-to-movie done by him...
Cringe-inducing ain't it?
As for this...well A History of Violence was okay in terms of the story. So if the script if being rewritten by its writer, then I'll take that as an okay. And the fact that Jackson is still sticking with this is a good sign as well. Personally, I'd like to see greater input from the people who penned Halo's story in the games (and even the novels).
$20 says that the delay is being caused by some crazy "financial-legalese," where all the various copyrights need to accounted for and basically who gets what for money. And until that's sorted out, work on this will essentially not happen except for minor hirings and such.
In relation to the MGS movie and with Kojima on possibly board as that movie's executive producer, Bungie and Microsoft should SERIOUSLY think about doing the something similar.
All in all, the financial and legal issues will work themselves out. As for the script and such, more people from Bungie should be involved.
Then again, who knows, Bungie may get more involved after Halo 3 is released...
if they keep delaying it peter jackson is gonna leave and uwe boll will take over, which literally means that the halo name will be ruined forever
No different from any other delay any other Halo has suffered, is going to suffer, will suffer.
Whats the point of these vidoegame movies? Games are games. Movies are movies.
Scripts always go through a couple treatments and rewrites to fix complications. The problem with games-made movies is that they're not taken seriously and usually someone drops the ball.
Script re-written a third time because the story is worthless garbage.
hahahaha pwnt! MGS movie on the way and it will kick Halo's butt.
I POOP MY PANTS!!!
Man that suckss! ERRR! I want a CGI Halo movie , like the TV spot commercial. That would be a 100% box office hit.
dang...but if we have to wait for a really good movie... I guess we wait.
I actually walked out of History Of Violence at the movies. What a POS movie that was. Leave it to hollywood to let us down again.
myself, i'm finding myself wondering which bit(s) of the story it'll cover - there's the fall of reach, halo 1, the bit between 1 and 2, 2, and anything from there to 3. i defenitely agree with ra-devil, it's going to be huge, but by the time they launch it, a lot more of the later timeline will have been covered, taking away part of the supsence.
I'm glad that they are willing to put so much effort into this movie, but it saddens me when production companies just don't understand what these people are trying to make. In their minds, they think, "Oh, cheapy video game movie," but in reality, its more like Lord of the Rings. Not cheap, and not something you can throw together in 3 months. I was so ready to see this movie, but I suppose I'll have to wait till they team up with a better Production co. Maybe New Line Cinemas, the ones who did LotR, or Paramount. Owell, guess we'll all have to wait and see.
FOR F******K SAKE ALREADY PUT ON THE GODDAMN MOVIE BECAUSE IT IS GONNA BE F****** BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!
One day it has to happen in full realistic CGI like that one video of Master Chief losing his helmet. It HAS to happen. One day. Soon......

Halo 1's story wasn't all that special. An amazing game and the movie's special effects could look amazing, but it was basically an excuse to kill aliens. Halo 2 would be a better movie than the first game would be, but only by a bit.
better if it's not made at all than if it's created just as a crappy cash-in
Owned. Oh well, it doesn't matter, I bet it's going to be bad...
Come on boys and girls they may have postponed it for now but you know its well worth the wait !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah i think bruce willis should play master chief too but his not that tall like master chief cuz master chief is 7 feet
I hate to see companies like Universal and Fox back out of something like this. They're money hungry, and won't make the game unless they get a fat chunk of the profits. It makes me sick. The movie will be ****in badass anyway, and people will go see it. There's so much high quality intellectual property here, that if they do screw it up, they don't deserve anything less than the guillotine. I will see it, end of story.
WHAT!!!!!!! 2008! WTF! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! why the hell! why condem people to wait so long! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
PLZ PLZ PLZ MAKE IT! THEY HAVE TO MAKE IT!!!!!! AHHHHH! I CAN TALK IT ANYMORE...... well i can but still! COMMON MAKE THE DAM MOVIE!
bruce willis should play master chief...and they should have never cast vin diesel for hitman.....jason stathum would be a much better suiter for that role...but what do i know? i just play halo
just make the damn movie already. you had a great script writer..and a great director. microsoft has enough money. just finance the flick yourselves. my god
the movie is gonna bomb. who cares when it comes out? play the game.
just plain wrong with all the crappy game movies that came out lara croft, house of the dead , street fighter. This is a sure blockbuster WTF ! make it already
it will probally nevr cime iut now

i dont have xbox live
OMG now all the geeks that spend their whole day swearing at people on Halo 2 over X-box live will finally get up... to go see the halo movie at the theaters for every showing possible until it leaves theaters. Then they will go back to playing Xbox live halo again.. then when it comes out on dvd they will go buy the Halo movie and a second TV and put the second tv right next to their XBOX tv and they will play Multiplayer Halo on XBOX live AND watch the movie at the same time. wow.
how the hell is the movie delayed again, will the halo film ever come out, for christ sake hurry up with the dam movie
When will the madness stop?? First Resident Evil, then Doom, and now this? I swear...I love Halo with all my heart...if....IF YOU CAST THE ROCK AS MASTER CHIEF, PETER JACKSON THERE WILL BE BLOOD SHED AND VIOLENCE IN THE STREETS!!! GIVE THE HALO SCREENPLAY TO US FOOL!!!
when halo wars comes out on the big screen and on dvd, they should put it on xbox live
Halo 1 was a great game but nothing special. the fights were average and the multiplayer was kinda crap. Halo 2 was nothing new and i think halo 3 will be more or less the same...
Anyway i don't think halo is good enough to have a movie made by it, i think half life 1-2 should have a movie made about it, steam have done so much more in effort to the game than bungie have to halo. A better script (in-game) more dedicated to online gaming (so many mods, maps and extras), more in depth AI (responds to sound and touch) and a far more realistic story. The movie will be great though i think if its any thing as good as lotr.

I think they shouldve gotten Uwe Boll to direct the movie, it would be 10x better
I don't mind that much having to wait longer for this movie to come out. As I see it, the longer they wait, the better their ideas will get. These "setbacks" give them time to change aspects of the film. Even though they havent actually started, they will probably look over their ideas and change them for the better. It would piss me off too if they took off his helmet in the first movie...that and if they didn't use the same voice from the game. But give them time, and I don't doubt the movie will get two thumbs up. I mean come on...................................................PETER........JACKSON.
Why not do what they did with Snakes on a Plane, and let the true fans of the game write it. If Snakes on a Plane can be sponsored by a studio, as bad as it was, then someone should be willing to pony up the bucks for a movie that already had a great story associated with it through the game. And not to lose sight of a problem with some profit sharing scheme? Thanks guys, you just screwed the fans and moviegoers because you couldn't settle on who gets the loot.
If Master chief takes his helmet off in this one, well then they screwed the movie up.
Well, they say that they're making sure Halo is the "Best it can be", and I'm glad of the extra time to make sure the movie doesn't suck. But I can tell you that myself and every other halo fan in the nation will be pissed off at microsoft, if the movie eventually comes out and isn't PERFECT
If Universal and Fox backed out than this movie is screwed. Hollywood is gonna try and make this a drama with alot of slow parts...HALO IS NOT A DRAMA AND DESERVES NO SLOW BORING PARTS!!!! Fox is the master production company that made Independence day which is regarded as one of the best Sci Fi movies ever made. Personally i think they should bring in a more experienced Director and get rid of this guy. According to his recs he is a novice and has no experience of making a movie of this magnitude. If they want to succeed its gonna take the best graphics and special effects...they should consider bringing in George Lucas and his special effects company to really make this movie rock. An independant production company is not capable of such an undertaking.
I like games that urn into movies like Doom that was a good game and movie but halo is the best the so movie must be the best
Of course Blomkamp is sticking with Halo. Its his thin chance at getting recognized in the industry.
