Quantum Optics & Optical Materials

In the field of quantum optics and optical materials, the Optical Science Laboratory pursues the development of core-technologies that will innovate optical communications and optical signal processing and seeks fundamental scientific progress. Three research groups collaborate with each other and span several research fields ranging from optical materials to photonic devices to optical systems.

Photonic crystals
Photograph of two-dimensional photonic crystals fabricated on a 6-inch SOI wafer by SOR X-ray lithography.

Quantum cryptography
Experimental setup for and demonstration of quantum cryptography with a new photon source utilizing quantum dot and micro cavity.

Table-top terawatt laser system with controllable pulse shape
The temporal pulse shape is controlled in the femtosecond regime, and its effects on high-order harmonic generation in the extreme ultraviolet region is explored.

New IT horizon brought about by quantum uncertainty and entanglement

Toward sub-PHz signal processing

Short x-ray pulses for observing atomic motion

Probing photons in an ultimately small region of semiconductors

New material for future ultra-small photonic LSIs and ultimate control of light-matter interaction

Easy and fast fabrication of nanostructures
