Mable grew up with the Relays. After winning the 220y title in 1971, she returned in 1972 and 1973 to sweep the 100m and 200m championships. 1972 proved to be quite a year for Mable. While still a high school student, she made the U.S. Olympic team at 400m. Mable advanced to the final at the Munich Olympics, where she finished 5th. She did capture a silver medal as a member of the 4x400 relay. It also was at the 1972 Olympics that Mable and teammate Kathy Hammond traded the American record back and forth. In first round action, Mable lowered the previous auto-timed American record by 0.74 seconds, running 52.05. Two days later, Hammond claimed the record by clocking 51.92, but later that same day Mable snatched it back by running 51.91. In the final, Hammond finally settled the matter with a bronze medal performance of 51.64. Mable could not improve upon her time, and ran 51.96 to finish 5th. Born: 1955 |
