Berezhnaya was seriously injured in 1996, when her partner Oleg Sliakhov hit her on the head with his blade
while they practised a side by side spin. After her recovery, Berezhnaya teamed up with Sikharulidze. Together
with coaches Tamara Moskvina and Igor Moskvin and fellow skaters Oksana Kazakova/Artur Dmitriev, the
team moved to Hackensack in the USA in summer 1999. Sikharulidze sustained an injury shortly before Skate
Canada when his partner accidently cut his arm with her blade. The cut was 12 cm long and needed stitches.
Berezhnaya has opened a Cafe named "Axel" in her hometown. She decorated the room herself as she likes
painting and drawing.
