NEW YORK, Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Miramax Films has acquired the worldwide rights, excluding certain rights in Japan and Iran, to ``The Color of Hope,'' a documentary film directed by Iranian Academy Award® nominated Majid Majidi (``Children of Heaven'' and ``Baran''), it was announced today by Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein.
``The Color of Hope'' was filmed in Afghanistan in November at two International Red Cross camps, one situated in Taliban occupied territory and one located in the region controlled by the Northern Alliance. In the documentary, Majidi explores the current conflict in Afghanistan from the point-of-view of Afghan refugee children with an emphasis on the ability of people to show signs of resilience in even the most dire circumstances.
``As soon as we heard about Majid Majidi's important project, we offered him our full support,'' said Harvey Weinstein. ``Mr. Majidi has the unique ability to record humanity and tell stories from a child's perspective. While so many other documentaries like to show people dying, it's inspiring that he wants to show these people's ability to live.''
``Miramax's passion for this project was inspiring,'' said Majidi. ``I feel that Miramax is my home and am excited to be working with Harvey, Andrew and Sean again on this project which is so important to me. The film is dedicated to all homeless children who have no shelter in this world but who display in their worried eyes a deep hope for life.''
``The Color of Hope'' was brought into Miramax by Sean McPhillips, director of acquisitions. Andrew Herwitz, svp of acquisitions, negotiated on behalf of Miramax. Mr. Majidi was repped by Farabi Cinema Foundation.
Miramax is distributing Majidi's ``Baran,'' which opens in New York and Los Angeles on December 7, 2001, and also distributed ``Children of Heaven,'' which was nominated for the Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category in 1998.
