THE 12th Annual WORLD MUSIC AWARDS
MONTE-CARLO
On May 10th 2000, the World Music Awards will once again pay tribute to the very best in contemporary music from around the globe.
Under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert of Monaco, the 12th Annual World Music Awards will feature an extraordinary lineup of the world's best-selling recording-artists of the past year. It is the only truly international music awards ceremony in the world today, and the only show of its genre to be seen on prime-time network television in the US.
The 1999 World Music Awards were broadcast for the very first time during the May Sweeps at 9.00pm on May 20 as a 2 hour special on ABC and reached a share of 1-% in the most important metroppolitan markets and over 10 million viewers nationally. The special had an important impact on record sales that week on the Billboard top 200 best-selling album chart with several performers gaining a significant boost in their chart position.
The World Music Awards are broadcast prime-time on the top-rated networks in each country. In Europe alone, the show reaches tens of millions of homes unlike other American Music Award shows which air mostly on European pay per view channels reaching a few hundred thousand viewers at the very most. In France, the show was aired on the top network TF1 and held on to an incredible 50% share of all viewers watching television in France that night. In the UK the show was broadcast on iTV network and doubled the number of viewers on iTV for that slot with a 34% audience share.
The 12th Annual World Music Awards will be staged once again at Monte-Carlo's famous Sporting Club and broadcast to an audience of 900 million TV viewers in over 150 countries.
THE AWARDS
The World Music Awards honour the world's greatest selling recording-artists of the year in the various categories and the best-selling recording-artists of the year from each of the major record-buying countries around the world. These Awards are unique in that they are based purely on record sales, hence it is the record-buying music fans who determine the winners. The national member associations of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) provide the organization with the names of their overall best-selling artists and groups. In Italy and Spain the results are supplied by the leading national music magazines Musica & Dischi and Showpress.
The World's best-selling recording-artists in the various categories are determined after a thorough research conducted by the organization on record certifications and record company sales figures.
Apart from the world's best-selling artists in the various categories and the national best-selling artists, special millenium awards will be presented for the very first time to the world's best-selling recording-artist of All Time. Past Legend Award winners who have attended include Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Julio Iglesias, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Lionel Richie, the Bee Gees, Tony Bennett, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Prince, Maria Carey, Janet Jackson and Cher.
IFPI'S GOAL
At the 1999 World Music Awards, Jay Berman, Chairman of the International Federation of the Phonographic industry, mayed the special speech recognising the popular appeal of recording artist internationally and how the World Music Awards is such a unique event in that it truly represents the global nature of the music industry today.
IFPI's main goal is to convince the public to assist in their battle against piracy which is still the biggest problem in the music industry today. The close link with legitimate record sales has meant the World Music Awards has become a standard-bearer in the fight against piracy. One in every three music carries produced is a pirate copy, and this criminal activity is now costing the legitimate industry in excess of $5 billion a year.
THE PRINCESS GRACE HOSPITAL
100% of the proceeds from the sale of tickets to the 12th Annual World Music Awards will be donated to the construction of a Princess Grace Hospital on the African continent. With ticket proceeds from the 1999 World Music Awards, the first Princess Grace Hospital in Cameroun will begin its contruction shortly and will hopefully be inaugurated in the fall of 2000.
MONACO AIDE AND PRESENCE FOUNDATION
Monaco Aide and Presence Foundation is a very unique charity under the honorary Presidency of H.S.H. Prince Albert, and is run by a subvention from the Government of Monaco. 100% of all donations go directly to assisting underdeveloped areas mainly in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Brazil. No monies are deducted for office or administration costs.
With profits from international TV income and sponsorships, Marcor International through the Monaco Aide and Presence Foundation has been able to fully fund the construction of six World Music Awards projects including a home in Katukuranda, Sri Lanka for handicapped girls, a day hospital at Port Bouet on the Ivory Coast serving a population of over 170.000 inhabitants, a health centre in Orissa, India, with a casualty ward, a maternity ward, a general ward and a 24 hour ambulance service and a home for abandoned children in Brazil and a village for the homeless in Madagascar and the complete renovation of an existing hospital in Mokatam, Egypt.
