Coco Chanel's hands. Gants Schiaperelli

Coco Chanel‘s  hands at work and Schiaperelli‘s surrealist gloves both feature in this summer’s fashion must-see exhibition Haute Couture at the Paris Hotel de Ville.

Fashionistas need no excuse for a trip to Paris– but if you’re looking for one the current Haute Couture exhibition at the Hotel de Ville (on till early July) is definitely worth a visit. Curated by the Musée Galliera‘s Olivier Saillard and Anne Zazzo, ‘Paris Haute Couture’ opens with a selection of black and white photographs of some of the best known hands in fashion- literally – and continues with sketches and toiles and then opens into a hall containing key pieces from the history of couture cleverly displayed in glass cases which allow for 360 degree viewing.

Karl Lagerfeld Chanel Métiers d’Art collection

The Paris Haute Couture shows highlight France’s skilled artisans, ‘les petites mains’, who handstitch every detail of each exquisite gown. Equally important are the handcrafts such as embroidery, flower & button making. In order to protect the future of couture, the house of Chanel has bought up many of these studios, including legendary embroiderer Lesage.

Us fashionistas have been waiting with bated breath for Raf Simons‘ debut couture collection for Christian Dior & I’m sure noone was surprised to see Raf’s reworking of some classic Dior silhouettes. The show opened with a trouser suit whose jacket references Dior’s iconic 1947 Bar suit worn with a cigarette pant that proved a staple of this collection- shown in multiple ways; with jackets, under cropped & full-length strapless 1950s mood gowns. Another couture collection giving us a history-of-the-house was Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel– signature tweeds fashioned in silhouettes from the 1940s through the 1980s. The clothes were for grown-ups but lurex tights & hair & make-up in the style of Alexa Chung brought a more youthful feel. The show closed with a spectacular white dress- ahhh couture.

One of Louis Vuitton‘s first patrons was Empress Eugénie of France who lived in regal splendour with  Napoleon III at the Palais du Louvre that is now home to one of my favourite fashion museums the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. How apt then that the Musée is hosting ‘Louis Vuitton- Marc Jacobs‘ from 9th March to 16th September. The exhibition examines their respective contributions to the fashion systems of their eras taking visitors from industrialisation to globalisation. Enjoy the beautiful Busby Berkeley inspired film, directed by Ruth Hogben with creative director Katie Grand, that heralds the exhibition dates:

The Versace show opened couture week in Paris today. The show featured sculptural pieces in neutrals and metallics, with heavily embroidered laces, cutouts, sheers and metalwork detailing; splashes of colour were evident in pieces in vivid yellow, lime green and 2012’s colour of the year orange!
