The iconic Coach brand was founded in New York in 1941 as a men’s leather goods company. Over the years its product range has expanded into women’s accessories and apparel keeping craftsmanship and detail at the core of the brand. For Summer 2013 Mattel have treated us fashionistas to a Coach Barbie styled from top to toe in the SS 2013 collection.

The much anticipated David Bowie exhibition at London’s V&A museum is being enjoyed by record-breaking numbers of visitors. We swelled those numbers by taking the London College of Fashion‘s Access Fashion Business students, many of whom were newbies to the wonders of the Bowie!
The exhibition claims not to be a retrospective but uses David Bowie’s own vast archive- including hand written lyrics to many of his iconic songs, stage costumes and ‘sound and vision’- to explore the influences on, and influence of Bowie.
Accompanying the exhibition are a range of talks and activities. Curators Jeffrey Marsh and Victoria Broackes treated a captivated audience to a glimpse behind the scenes of staging the exhibition- their visit to the David Bowie archive in New York, how they selected artefacts to exhibit and explained the innovative audio-visual experience visitors enjoy as they tour the exhibition. They also shared their surprise and delight at the amazing coincidence of their opening coinciding with Bowie’s latest (highly secretive) album release- The Next Day.
The fabulous Theatre of Fashion‘s Amber Jane Butchart in conversation with Helene Thian as part of the V&A Bowie weekender explored Bowie’s interest in kabuki theatre and his creative collaboration with Japanese designer Kansai Yamamoto which spawned many iconic costumes.
The V&A shop features some fun products- I love the Bowie paper doll book.
All the world’s got Bowie-fever including Vogue Japan– the April 2013 edition features ‘Fashion Warrior’– a Bowie fashion spread.

Whilst the London weather continues in a wintry vein, I firmly believe Spring is on its way and am happy to have completed this beautiful Spring-weight scarf. Using stitch changes and a diagonal break in the pattern makes for a simple yet effective design. The pattern Aksew by knit designer Lisa Mutch can be found on Ravelry.com (designer’s photo). I bought the yarn at the wonderful Raveloe Fibers– hand-dyed Itata Multy yarn in Colour 1008 from Araucania Yarns– and just kept knitting till this is all I had left!

With Christmas fast approaching New York fashion store Barneys releases its Holiday 2012 campaign. Love fashion Minnie!!
Barneys New York has just unveiled its Holiday campaign. A collaboration with the Walt Disney Company, ‘Electric Holiday’ stars many recognisable front row fashionista in a delightful and witty animation. Disney characters model designs from Alber Elbaz and Nicholas Ghesquière, have hair & makeup by Pat McGrath, Guido Palau and Julien d’Ys and are photographed by Steven Meisel, Mario Sorrenti and Juergen Teller. The front row is full of fashion media ledgends including Carine Roitfeld, Anna Dello Russo, Cathy Horyn, Glenda Bailey, Bridget Foley, Emmanuelle Alt, Suzy Menkes and Franca Sozzani. KCD’s Ed Filipowski produces the fashion show and guests include Daphne Guinness, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Bryan Boy.

Ralph Lauren‘s Spring Summer 2013 collection offers sharp silhouettes in a simple colour palette of red, black, white and turquoise and a stylish take on the Spanish matador with hats, capes, jodphurs & ruffle detailing. There were a series of LBDs but the most stunning dresses were a red strapless gown with detailing on the bodice & a white column dress worn with a flat-topped Spanish hat & a red flower at the hip.

It seems fashionistas just can’t get enough of Versailles & its gardens . They make a wonderful backdrop to the Dior pre-Fall 2012 collection in this film by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, featuring models Daria Strokus, Melissa Stasiuk & Xiao Wen Ju with a soundtrack from Depeche Mode.

According to the introduction Skald was ‘an ancient Scandinavian poet who memorialised the epic deeds of the Vikings with elaborate recitations at court’, Skald is also an award-winning art & literature publication produced by the students of Villa Maria College New York. Featuring work from many college departments there’s plenty for a fashion-lover to enjoy!

Swimmer Ryan Lochte, decathlete Bryan Clay, rower Giuseppe Lanzone and women’s football player Heather Mitts model the 2012 US Olympic team opening ceremony uniforms blissfully unaware, as they pose in the Ralph Lauren retro loveliness, of the controversy about to boil over regarding their offshore manufacture in China.
In this CNN report Senator Harry Reid & fashion designer Nanette Lepore express their frustration at what they see as a missed opportunity to highlight onshore manufacture. But is this a realistic option in today’s globalised fashion industry? Dan Ikenson from the US think tank the Cato Institute argues that offshoring is a natural result of free market economics.
According to an article in the LA Times, Li Giulian founder of Dayang Trands (the Chinese manufacturer of the Ralph Lauren US team uniforms), questions whether the US has the capability to produce the uniforms, stating ‘We have cheaper costs here so you can have cheaper prices in America.’
This story provides an interesting ethical debate for fashionistas.

Liberty of London was founded in 1875 by Arthur Liberty who travelled the globe sourcing innovative design in ornaments, furniture, jewellery, textiles & fashion; in Oscar Wilde‘s words ‘Liberty is the chosen resort of the artistic shopper’.
The iconic tudor-framed building on Regent’s Street dates from the 1920s when the original store was remodelled using timbers from 2 ships: HMS Impregnable and HMS Hindustan.
This week Liberty hosts Jewellers en Residence: a series of events highlighting bespoke & vintage jewellery from designers including Alex Monroe, Lulu Frost & Venessa Arizaga.
