Night Sea Journey (Nekyia)

In many ancient myths, a giant serpent or whale swallows the sun or a hero, carrying them through the darkness of the ocean.

In Jungian psychology, this archetype is known as the “night sea journey” (Nekyia). It symbolizes consciousness temporarily descending into the depths of the unconscious to undergo transformation and renewal.
