In what’s seemingly becoming a regular tradition in the SVOD world, Peacock is the latest streamer to increase subscription prices — less than a year after its first price hike.

Starting mid-July, subscribers will have to pay an extra $2 for the ad-supported Peacock Premium and the mostly ad-free Premium Plus plans, bringing those to $7.99 and $13.99 a month, respectively. The annual plans saw a $20 increase to $79.99 for Premium and $139.99 for Premium Plus.

On paper, Peacock’s new prices put it in the range of big-league streamers including Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video. But in reality, Peacock is nowhere near those platforms in terms of subscribers, despite growing its base to 34 million in 2023.

As we learned last week, the streamer is still struggling to turn a profit, with parent company Comcast reporting a $639 million loss for the first quarter of the year. Granted, that was technically good news compared with the $825 million loss from 2023’s final quarter.

EXCLUSIVE: A Third of Peacock Users Still Subscribe for Free

Interestingly, these hikes arrive while a third of Peacock subscribers are still on the grandfathered free-tier plan (link above), which the streamer axed in early 2023. While funneling those customers into a free plan is almost certainly on the table, Peacock seems to think getting prospective customers on board with higher prices is the easier battle for now.

After all, with Peacock being the exclusive U.S. streamer for the upcoming Summer Olympics, Comcast is probably hoping for a healthy bump in subscribers. Only time will tell if those Olympics fans will stick around long enough for Peacock to whittle down its losses further.
