Angela Bassett in an American actor known for her roles in "What's Love Got to Do With It," Marvel's "Black Panther" series, the Kathryn Bigelow dystopian thriller "Strange Days" and the TV series "9-1-1." Bassett was born Aug. 16, 1958 in New York City. She studied at Yale University and graduated with a bachelors in African American studies before obtaining a Masters at the Yale School of Drama. There, she met her future husband Courtney B. Vance. After stage acting, she earned attention on the big screen for roles in "Boyz N the Hood" and "Malcolm X." She received her first Academy Award nomination for her performance as Tina Turner in "What's Love Got to Do With It." On the TV side, Bassett's notable credits include "The Jacksons: An American Dream," "The Rosa Park's Story," and multiple TV series created by prolific producer Ryan Murphy, including FX's "American Horror Story" and Fox's "9-1-1." Bassett has been nominated for two Academy Awards, receiving an honorary accolade in 2024, 11 Emmys, and has two Golden Globe wins. She is married to actor Courtney B. Vance.
