Helping local people face incurable illness and bereavement

About us

We help local people face incurable illness, supporting them and their families, friends and carers. We also support children and adults who are facing bereavement. We reach out to members of our community, helping them make their own choices and live with dignity. By focusing on their physical, emotional and spiritual needs, we aim to bring comfort and relief to all those who need it, offering the people of North Essex individual care and total support, regardless of their diagnosis or personal circumstances. We rely heavily on the help and generosity of our fundraisers, donors and volunteers. Without them we wouldn’t be here. We all share a common goal: to be here every step of the way for everyone who needs us, helping life to go on in the face of dying, death and bereavement. By visiting them in their homes, over the phone with our 24/7 advice line, through our day therapies, and at The Hospice, through all the smiles and all the tears we guide those who need us, because we believe in making every memory matter. Employees at St Helena

Updates

  • February is Payroll Giving Month, celebrating one of the simplest and most tax-efficient ways to support charities doing vital work. Payroll Giving allows employees to donate straight from their salary before tax — meaning your gift goes further at no extra cost to you. Even a small monthly donation can have a big, lasting impact. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who already supports us through Payroll Giving, and we’d love more workplaces to get involved. If you’re an employer or corporate partner, Payroll Giving can be a brilliant way to engage staff, support causes they care about, and amplify your social impact — especially when combined with matched giving.

  • There is a lot of news right now about the financial state of hospices nationally and we want to reassure you that, after the difficult decision over the summer to have to reduce some of our clinical services, St Helena is now in a financially stable position. We continue to be here for people across north east Essex when they need specialist hospice care. We want to thank you for your continued amazing support in helping us to be here for local people who face dying, death and bereavement.  Hospices have recently been awarded further money as part of the government’s capital funding scheme. Whilst we welcome this, it remains a one-off pot of money that can only be spent on things like building work and new IT systems. It is not allowed to be spent on our nurses' salaries or funding our clinical services where the need is greatest. We continue to stand with our colleagues in other hospices up and down the UK who are struggling to keep their lights on. We want to see long-term sustainable funding for palliative and end of life care, with annual uplifts that at least match inflation and wider cost increases, so that end of life care is treated the same way the NHS funds healthcare at all other stages in life. - Dr Karen Chumbley and Kate Heslegrave, Co-Chief Executives of St Helena

  • "The 1960s were good. The ’66 World Cup was good. Used to like life, socialising and dancing, rock n roll. Used to sing on a lot of karaokes, used to love them. I was a football man, played football until I was 45." Neil's memories were recorded for our Life Stories exhibition to celebrate people beyond their diagnosis 🧡 https://lnkd.in/empmVA74
