It’s been a year since a winning design was selected for the LGBT+ armed forces community memorial: “An Opened Letter.” In this first film from The Making of a Memorial, artists from Abraxas Academy share the ideas behind the design - a memorial created to honour LGBT+ service personnel, past, present and future. Discover how veteran voices were used to tell a story of service, courage and recognition. Why does ethnicity pay gap reporting matter? For Ethnicity Pay Gap Day, Minister Malhotra visited KPMG where they have been reporting ethnicity pay gaps since 2017. She met with senior leaders and employees to see the real-world impact of better data and a commitment to transparency. This has given the business the data to make changes, with the Partner and Vice-Chair of KPMG, Richard Iferenta, saying “Once you understand where the deficiencies are in your business in the context of pay gaps, you can then take appropriate actions” This is why the government is making ethnicity and disability pay gap reporting mandatory for employers with 250 or more employees, to break down barriers and provide more workers across Great Britain with the same opportunity to thrive.

No one should have to face health inequalities because of their race. Following a community engagement session the day before, the Minister for Equalities Seema Malhotra and the Race Equality Engagement Group held a roundtable to discuss how disparities can be addressed at a systems-level, with NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care in attendance. We are committed to breaking down barriers to tackle race inequality. The REEG is putting the lived experience of ethnic minority people at the heart of Government.

Deaf people should have a say on the issues that matter most to them. Minister Timms sat down with LumoTV, the only provider of TV and film made specifically for Deaf people, to talk about our refreshed BSL Advisory Board. As well as providing vital information in their native language. Lumo creates content where Deaf people can also see themselves and their lives reflected. We are breaking down barriers to make sure Deaf and disabled people can thrive.

Evidence shows us that Black women are not getting the maternity care they deserve - they are twice as likely to die in childbirth. The Race Equality Engagement Group met for a community engagement session to discuss maternity and neonatal care. At the event, we heard from healthcare professionals, researchers, grass-roots organisations and individuals who shared their own personal experiences. Pregnancy should not be something women fear or look back on with trauma and it is unacceptable that some women and babies from ethnic minority backgrounds are disproportionately at risk. Sharing these stories is key to gathering deep insights, understanding lived experiences, and identifying challenges in order to drive real change.
