Nintendo's introduction of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in the winter of 1985 marked a significant moment for the videogame industry.1 The NES and its underlying 10NES chip signaled a sea change in the digital media landscape, and scholars are only now beginning to understand its impact on media users and consumers.2
