A large number of high quality events this week. The top event is the Sarajevo tournament and with two rounds to go its looking very promising for Garry Kasparov. However it still has to be done and the last two rounds should be exciting.
Hope you enjoy this issue

Garry Kasparov and Evgeny Bareev lead the Category 19 tournament in Sarajevo with 7 of the nine rounds completed. The event runs Monday 17th-26th May. The event has had lots of fighting chess so far and Kasparov, after a slow start is looking good for his third consecutive impressive tournament victory. So far, this is Bareev's best performance for a number of years. Kasparov has Timman with black and Michael Adams with white still to play. Shirov and Adams are in joint 3rd-4th place.

Grandmaster Lembit Oll, the number one Estonian player, died in the early hours of Monday 17th May 1999. He was only 33 years old (he was born 23rd April 1966).
Oll became a Grandmaster in 1992 and at the time of his death was rated 2630, World number 42. His last tournament was in Nova Gorica, this spring, where he was second behind GM Kozul. Oll was a strong Grandmaster and, for example, his score against the 10 participants of the Sarajevo tournament which started on his last day, was +13=18 -8 in Lembit's favour: Kasparov (2812) +0=1 0, Shirov (2726) +2=6 3, Morozevich (2723) +3=1 0, Adams (2716) +0=0 0, Topalov (2700) +2=1 1, Short (2697) +0=1 2, Leko (2694) +0=1 0, Barejev (2679) +3=0 0, Timman (2649) +0=3 0, I. Sokolov (2610) +3=4 2. Oll was a familiar face throughout the World, especially on the international open circuit.
Oll lived in the suburbs of Tallinn and had two sons. However he was recently divorced and that had influenced him a lot. After a farewell in the Chesshouse in Tallinn he was buried on Saturday at the Metsakalmistu (Forest Graveyard) in Tallinn. The same same graveyard where Paul Keres rests.
It had seemed that Oll had started to recover from his recent depression. Oll was preparing very hard to play in the FIDE World Championships in Las Vegas. In the last WC he reached the third round eliminating GM Morozevich on the way. However at around 4-30am on Monday morning he jumped out of his apartment window.
IM Dmitry Tyomkin reports: The 1st Israeli Supertournament was organized by the Israeli Chess Federation and is took place in the Sol and Sisi Mark Center and Garry Kasparov Chess Academy building in Tel Aviv 10th-19th of May. The participants were the ten top Israeli grandmasters. 5 of them qualifed to play the event by rating, (Gelfand, Smirin, Alterman, Sutovsky and Avrukh) four (Mark Tseitlin, Huzman, Psahis, Zilberman) by their results in the Israeli Open Championship that was held in April this year, and finally the Champion of Israel in 1998 Liss was also invited.
The idea and a major part of the organization was down to GM Boris Alterman. The event is a 9 round single round robin tournament. The time control is 100 minutes for first the 40 moves, then 50 minutes for next 20 moves, and 10 minutes for the rest to each player. There is a 30 second increment for each move played. This time control is equivalent to the old 2h/40,1h/20,1/2h. 9 players in the event were born in former Soviet Union. This was the debute of Boris Gelfand in a serious closed event in Israel as an Israeli citizen.
The event was won by Gelfand, Smirin and Psakhis all of whom scored 6.5/9 undefeated.
Round by round
Round 7
Round 7 was another great chess day! As I predicted the most exciting game was
Liss against Smirin. Liss tried to crush Smirin from the opening and got a very
dangerous attack after a piece sacrifice in the Sicilian. It looked like Liss's
attack was going to be decisive but then Smirin defended very accurately and
remained with material up. Finally he won on move 26. Psakhis showed the better
understanding of French Defence with black pieces against Sutovsky and beat him
after a nice counterattack. Finally, Gelfand did not get too much with the
white pieces against his second Huzman out of the opening, but later on he used
weaknesses in the position of his opponent and won. Tseitlin found very
interesting strategical idea in Gruenfeld with black and equalised. Then during
the last time-control Avrukh lost concentration and in a very complicated
position didn't use his chances and lost. Mark Tseitlin has had great
performance in this tournament! Alterman tried to crush underdog Zilberman and
was very close to the target getting into the ending with a pawn up. But he was
not on top form and let Zilberman to save the game. There are 3 players who
will fight for first place in the two last rounds. The top game tomorrow should
be Sutovsky-Gelfand. Emil will try to improve his bad situation in this
tournament, whilst Gelfand will look for clear first.
Round 8 This was the 8th day of the tournament, and it looks like that all the guys are very tired including bulletin editor! But I decided to stay with you today instead of sleep. One more day left to the end of this celebration! All the top players didn't want to clarify the situation and added half a point more to their standings. Psakhis drew quickly with Smirin. Sutovsky broke his no-draw series and gave respect to Gelfand making a draw with him in the early stage of the opening with white pieces of a Closed Sicilian. Huzman got some opening advantage, but he wasn't too ambitious and drew as well. Mark spent all the energy in his game against Avrukh, and made a horrible blunder on 13th move against Liss, who got an easy point. Alterman was very tired after a 7 hour game against Zilberman, opened safely with white against Avrukh. In equal position he offered draw, but Avrukh didn't plan to go home this day so quickly and continued. Finally Alterman blundered allowing a very nice tactical blow and lost a piece. He resigned at once. The tomorrow last round will bring us these games games: Gelfand will try and crush Psakhis with the white pieces, which is not so easy to do. Smirin with white is a clear favorite in his game against Tseitlin. I guess that we will not get onr winner in this tournament and first prize will be shared.
The Final Round by GM Alex Finkel and IM Dima Tyomkin
The last round was as usually happens was rich in quick draws. Liss with the white pieces secured the fourth place with his draw against Alterman who didn't manage to win a single game in this event. Gelfand quiet surprisingly offered a draw after 17 moves against Psakhis. It is true that he got nothing in the opening, but the position was still full of life, and he could have kept on playing. After this draw both opponents tied for the first place and waited for Smirin's result to find out if he will join them on the tie. Smirin(as a true winner!) had a lot of luck in his final round game against Mark Tseitlin. Tseitlin outplayed Smirin with the black pieces in Spanish, but instead of slowly increasing the pressure he went for tactical complications and blundered, missing a nice intermediate move after which he remained a piece down and he then lost after an exciting fight. Zilberman came close to his only win against, but an inaccuracy in the technical part of the game prevented from him from escaping the last place. Avrukh, in nice positional style, outplayed the rock solid Huzman and slightly improved his mood (and our's too!) after a disastrous start to the tournament (I would like to remind you that he started the tournament with ½ out of 4). A young soldier in Israeli Army he showed his tremendous potential in his last two games. The Blitz Championship of Israel took place after the closing ceremony. The majority of top players (including about 20 GM's and 20 Im's!) took part. Clear first place was taken by IM Michael Oratovsky with fantastic performance 9 of 11 (his only loss was to Avrukh in the last round when nobody could catch him). 2-3 places were shared by Avrukh and Alon Greenfeld with 8,5 points. I hope you enjoyed reading my reports and I am looking forward to meeting you again on the pages of site of Israeli Federation.

"64 Chess Review" magazine (editor-in-chief Alexander Roshal) organised the Chess Oscars for the Best performances of 1998. They asked chess journalists and experts for their opinions. (The "Oscar" tradition was restored by "64" in 1996.) The received 271 lists from 57 countries. Anand and Morozevich were clearly the players of last year, Kasparov finished in third but probably has already done enough at Linares and Wijk aan Zee to be almost certain of the 1999 title (unless he loses a match later in the year).
The final results were (top ten):
1.Anand 3278 points 2.Morozevich 2146 3.Kasparov 1993 4.Kramnik 1865 5.Shirov 1853 6.Karpov 764 7.Svidler 736 8.Ivanchuk 609 9.Adams 510 10.Leko 474
Others: 11.Korchnoi 390, 12.Polgar J. 360, 13.Short 321, 14.Ponomarev 221, 15.Gelfand 217.)
(First place in the list 13 points, second 11, third 9, fourth 7, fifth 6...tenth 1.)
The 34th Capablana Memorial took place May 7th - 22nd 1999. The Category 12 Elite group was won by Tony Miles who was undefeated on 8.5 points. He was half a point clear of Suat Atalik, Lazaro Bruzon and Julio Becerra Rivero. FM Lazaro Bruzon scored a GM norm. Francisco Vallejo Pons won the Category VIII Premier I group with 9.5/13, 1.5 points clear of Mikhael Pogaets. Cuban FM Luis Manuel Perez won the Category VIII Premier II group with 9/13 a point ahead of Alexandre Lesiege who recovered from a poor start to finish second on 8/11. The Mixto group was won by Jose Alvarez with 10/13.

GM Jeroen Piket made an even score, which was good enough for clear second and $100. GM Emil Sutovsky had a difficult tournament, losing both games to Svidler, but manged to score 2.5, getting third place and $100. GM Babakuli Annakov played some interesting games in the event, but took fourth, and $50 for his efforts.
The event was run on and sponsored by the Internet Chess Club (http://www.chessclub.com) and organized and directed by John Fernandez. The average rating of the participants was 2636 FIDE, or Category 16!! The Internet Chess Club plans to run some more events like this in the future, for the club. Bobby Ang reports from the Philippines.
1999 PHILIPPINE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS SSS Canteen, East Avenue, Quezon City
GM Rogelio Antonio, Jr. (or Joey Antonio, as we all call him) won the 1999 Philippine National Championships in run-away fashion by scoring 6 wins and 4 draws for a final tally of 8/10.
The format for this year's championship called for an 11-round Swiss system (open to all rated players) tournament to determine the top ten, who then qualify for the grand finals, where they were to be joined by GMs Eugene Torre and Joey Antonio in a round-robin tournament.
The eliminations started last April 1, 1999, and was won by IM Bong Villamayor, followed by a massive tie for 2nd-10th places. In no particular order they are: FM Luiz Chiong, NM Richard Bitoon, NM Joseph Sanchez, NM Eduardo Ortiz, FM Petronio Roca, NM Rolly Martinez, NM Gerry Cabellon, NM Ben Flores and NM Arlan Cabe.
NM Homer Cunanan had a sob story: after winning his last round game with NM Jerry Nodado everybody thought that he had qualified, since his tie-break points gave him the advantage over anybody with whom he might tie. The only way he would miss out was if by some miracle the results of 5 games turned out a certain way.
Sadly, this was exactly what happened (really uncanny - in the last game to finish IM Chito Garma with everything to play for had a hallucination and actually hung a whole rook against Cabe, allowing the latter to sneak into the finals instead of Cunanan).
When GM Eugene Torre declined to take part in the grand finals due to his on-going dispute with the Philippine Chess Federation, Homer Cunanan once again thought that he had qualified, since he was the next-in-line. Sadly again, in a special board meeting held on the starting date of the finals it was decided to push through with an 11-man field and not to activate any of the reserves.
You can read detailed newspaper reports by Bobby Ang at his website at: http://www.philchess.com.ph (see "Businessworld columns" where you will find several articles, background stories and annotated games about this tournament.)

MATCH OF THE MILLENNIUM: Indonesia vs Rest-of-the-World Bali, Indonesia May 2-11, 1999
In Bali some chess enthusiasts organized this "Match of the Millennium", pitting the 4-man Indonesian team of GM Utut Adianto, IM Cerdas Barus, IM Denny Juswanto and GM Edhi Handoko and the rest of the world team composed of GM Jaan Ehlvest, GM Eugene Torre, GM Erik Van den Doel, and GM Darryl Johansen in a double round Scheveningen tournament.
There was no prize money at stake, and the games were unrated, so most of the ROW players went to Bali with the full intention of taking a vacation. They were surprised to find a well-prepared Indonesian side which was dead-serious in winning the event.
Showing magnificent form, GM Adianto towed the Indonesian side to a 5-pt lead before disaster struck in the penultimate round when they were blanked 4-0. Seeing their enormous lead shrink to a mere point, the host players went to great lengths to hold the ROW team to a 2-2 draw in the last round and win the match.

Anjo Anjewierden reports: The Dutch junior championship took place in the historical building "De Waag" in Leiden (May 3-11). Pre-tournament favourites IM Ruud Janssen, trying to win the tournament for a fourth consecutive time, and IM Sipke Ernst did not play a significant role. Thomas Willemze took an early lead with 5/6 before he was stopped by Marten Wortel in round 7. With two rounds to go there were four leaders with 5/7: Willemze, Wortel, Joost Berkvens and Maarten Solleveld. Of these, only Berkvens withstood the pressure, he won the last two games and claimed clear first with 7/9.
Desiree Hamelink is the new girls-champion. She is a fanatic supporter of Dutch soccer champion Feyenoord (Rotterdam) and her dress at chess tournaments consists of the Feyenoord outfit (we suspect she hardly plays in Amsterdam).
The other new champions are:
Boys U16: Jan Werle (after a play-off against Gabriel Molinari)
Girls U16: Arlette van Weersel
Boys U14: Jan Smeets
Girls U14: Marlies Bensdorp (after a play-off against Annemiek Willemze)
All games from all sections can be found at:
More detailed coverage of the Dutch Junior championships is available at http://www.schaakbond.nl/index2.html including all the games from all sections.

Rolf Sander reports: The first two rounds of Hamburg's Chess Championship have been completed (the event runs 22nd-30th May). The leaders after the first two rounds are GM Kempinski, IM Urban and FM Lamprecht, who managed to win against GM Ftacnik in round 2. The organizers were very unhappy to receive three cancellations of Grandmasters in the week before the tournament started, so that it will be quite difficult to score GM norms for the GM candidates. Apart from that, we see an interesting tournament with quite a few surprising results.

Eric van der Schilden reports:
For the third consecutive time Rotterdam will be hosting the Dutch Chess Championship. The organizers claim to have found an excellent location: the public library located directly next to station Blaak in the city centre. The tournament will be played from May 29 until June 10 (last round and prize giving). Rest days are June 2 and 7. Compared to last year, the budget has shifted from starting fees toward prize money. The total prize fund has doubled and amounts fl 60 000.-- now. The tournament will be covered with live games on internet on:
Participants GM Predrag Nikolic (11-9-1960), rating: 2633 GM Loek van Wely (7-10-1972), rating: 2632 GM Ivan Sokolov (13-6-1968), rating: 2624 GM Jeroen Piket (27-1-1969), rating: 2619 GM Dimitri Reinderman (12-8-1972), rating: 2541 GM Erik van den Doel (15-5-1979), rating: 2535 GM Paul van der Sterren (17-3-1956), rating: 2535 GM Roberto Cifuentes-Parada, (21-12-1957) rating: 2529 GM John van der Wiel (9-8-1959), rating: 2526 GM Friso Nijboer (26-5-1965), rating: 2515 IM/WGM Peng Zhao Qin (8-5-1968), rating: 2452 Ruud Janssen (1-5-1979), rating: 2445 The average rating is 2549: category 12.
Jan Timman has decided not to play this tournament. It doesn't fit in his preparation for the World Championship. Moreover he couldn't reach financial agreement with the organizers. Despite Timman's absence, this tournament will be the highest rated Dutch Championship ever. There are ten Grandmasters who all have played in the tournament before: Cifuentes, Van den Doel, Nijboer, Nikolic, Piket, Reinderman, Sokolov, Van der Sterren, Van Wely and Van der Wiel. The field is completed by two wildcards: First Ruud Jansen, who impressed by finishing fifth at the last World Junior Championship. Finally IM/WGM Peng Zhao Qin. She received a wildcard for her results at the last Olypiad (bronze medal on board one) and Candidates Tournament (fifth). Peng will be the first woman ever to take part in the Dutch Championship.
Sokolov defends title It has to be noted that this will be the last time that Bosnians Sokolov and Nikolic will be exempted from the "National Team Rule". This rule says that players who want to play the Championship have to be eligible for the national team. Both Bosnians have not expressed the intention to play for the Dutch team (instead of the Bosnian team). Only if they do so, can they play in the next Championship.
The Brazilian Junior Championships (sub-20 boys and girls) took place 20-23 May, in Brasilia Chess Club - Brasilia - Brasil. The favourites won: - f Ricardo Benares won Absolut sub-20 (there were 43 players) - f Barbara Farhat won Girls sub-20 (there were 10 players) Results and games are available at: http://www.persocom.com.br/bcx.index2.htm
