The Independent News & Media Pte Ltd is a privately held company incorporated in the Republic of Singapore (UEN: 200801353D), operating under a class license issued by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA). The company maintains full civil personality and adheres to commercial regulations in accordance with Singaporean law.
Founded in August 2013 by Kumaran Pillai, PN Balji, Leon Perera, Alfred Dodwell, and Edmund Wee, the publication was established to offer an independent, credible, and responsible voice in Singapore’s media ecosystem. Leon Perera and Alfred Dodwell have since exited the company.
The Independent is fully self-funded through advertising revenue and shareholder contributions, with no external investors or institutional backing — allowing it to maintain editorial independence and operational autonomy.
