I watched the Russian Cup BB event final. Oh my! Did they grease down the beam beforehand? It was special even by Russian standards. Why is it that the Russian girls show absolutely No. Fight. At. All. on beam? It’s maddening. Say what you will about Marta Karolyi (and people are saying plenty), but she created a culture in which the American girls fight for their lives on beam. The Russians act like they don’t care.

They said the beam was brand new and super soft, so it couldn’t take the impact of landings as well, making it harder to grab on with their toes…but I feel like that’s 50% true and 50% of the problem is that this is Russia on beam we’re talking about, lol.

Yes, the juniors didn’t ALL fell off the beam (which was the same for everybody).

Watching the stream, do you think that the scores were fair, over, or underscored?

Fair, for the most part! Last year they had multiple 15s on beam and that was a little…no. But this year they’ve definitely scaled back a bit which I was happy to see.

For sheer entertainment value, I would have loved to see multiple 15s given out for those beam routines. But even Russia has its limits. The one who really broke my heart on beam was Kharenkova. Remember when she was a real beamer? Now she can’t put a double back dismount to her feet (unless she missed a foot on the dismount takeoff).
And I didn’t realize Zubova was attempting an Onodi until I read the comments below. I had no idea what the girl was attempting. It wasn’t anything resembling a successful element.

I sound snarky and dismissive of the Russian girls. I don’t mean to be. I actually adore the Russian team. They are so much fun and they do some great skills. I tease because I love.

can we please talk about zubova’s “onodi”?

The stalder entry? Very innovative. Reminiscent of Beefarm’s Cheng.

It drives me crazy because she has such original combos and can be so amazing on this event, and this skill just ruins the routine. Poor technique, ugly and she falls every time. WHY????

It took me several views to realize that’s what she was attempting. She constantly falls on it and it looks so wonky that I can’t imagine it being great in training either. I’m not sure why they’re keeping it in.
