Daria Spiridonova of Russia continued her international winning streak with the all-around gold at the 2014 Élite Gym Massilia master competition in Marseille, France this weekend.

Giorgia Campana of Italy won silver while Nina Derwael of Belgium won bronze. The team gold went to Italy with silver and bronze going to Russia and Belgium, respectively. Both juniors and seniors participated.

In addition to her all-around gold, Spiridonova also took the gold on bars in Sunday’s event finals. Her teammate Maria Paseka won gold on vault, Claire Martin of France won gold on beam, and junior Axelle Klinckaert of Belgium won gold on floor.

Paseka fell on her Amanar in qualifications, but landed a decent DTY and FTY in the vault final, which used junior rules (making it acceptable to perform the same family vault in each attempt). Though she looked a bit messy coming onto the table, her landings were easily her best all year.

Though not as polished as some of her other bars attempts this fall (she showed tiny form breaks on several elements and stepped on her full-out dismount), Spiridonova managed to pick up yet another bars medal with ease.

Martin continues to impress with her lovely style on beam, managing to hit her strong beam difficulty nicely here (including a solid bhs-bhs-loso to start things off). She also showed a lovely Onodi, sissone to side aerial, and full Y turn before hitting her somewhat deep double pike dismount. Though she did have some bobbles, she handled them with confidence…I think if she continues to improve here, I’d say she could sneak into the beam finals at Worlds in 2015.

Floor champion Klinckaert is absolutely adorable in this energetic and sassy routine! She worked her double arabian, whip whip to double back, 2.5, and double pike with relative ease…a tiny bit more control on landings would jack up her already strong execution quite a bit. Seriously, love this routine and can’t wait to see more from the little Belgian.

About two tenths behind Klinckaert in the silver medal position on floor was Romania’s Olivia Cimpian, a former rhythmic gymnast who began training artistic gymnastics over the past couple of years. Her rhythmic training is most evident in her flexibility displays as well as in her turns, and though she has some work to do before she can become a major threat for Romania, what she shows here is definitely a good start. Not bad!

In the open competition held on Friday, Switzerland’s Giada Grisetti won gold, Rose Kaying Woo of Canada won silver, and Florine Harder of Germany won bronze. In the team competition, Belgium won gold, Canada won silver, and Germany won bronze.

I was most impressed with the young Belgians at this competition. In addition to Klinckaert, Derwael, Senna Deriks, and Rune Hermans showed the makings of a bright future for this team, especially on vault and floor. I’m very excited to see what they can do when they join the senior ranks in the coming years.

The open competition also saw the return of Noël van Klaveren and Eythora Thorsdottir of the Netherlands. Both have been dealing with injuries, with van Klaveren also missing months of training due to her father suffering from an illness.

Van Klaveren made it to vault finals, where she earned the bronze medal after competing a powerful DTY and FTY. In the all-around she placed 19th after struggling on bars and beam.

Her fall on beam was a heartbreaker; after nailing her punch front mount, she split the beam really hard on her side aerial to loso series before falling again on a leap series and then a third time on her bhs-bhs-layout. A bummer of a routine, though she didn’t look discouraged and finished with a 2.5 dismount.

She showed the makings of a very strong floor routine, however, nailing a powerful double layout in her opening pass before hitting her triple full and 2.5 with a step out of bounds. With a bit more time in the gym, she’ll definitely be a Worlds contender next year.

Thorsdottir placed 4th in the open all-around after a steady day of competition. Floor was her standout, and she became a strong contender for a medal in the final after showcasing a beautiful performance and dance elements (she went for a triple Y turn but only got it about 2.5 times around) in addition to strong tumbling, including a double pike and 2.5.

She got the triple Y turn around in the floor final, but unfortunately had some stumbles on other elements and then sat her 2.5, placing 7th.
