John Singleton

(He/Him)

Dr John Singleton is a media and cultural studies scholar based at the University of Galway, where he lectures on global media, digital storytelling, media literacy, and cultural representation. His research explores how narrative, identity, and power circulate across media forms — from literature and journalism to digital platforms, music culture, and visual media.

Originally trained in literary studies, John’s background in narrative theory, textual analysis, and spatial form continues to inform his approach to contemporary media. His monograph John McGahern: Ways of Looking (Routledge, 2024) examined questions of vision, place, and perspective — concerns that now underpin his current work on digital media ethics, platform culture, and the aesthetics of sincerity in online spaces.

Alongside academic publishing, John is committed to practice-based and public-facing scholarship. He regularly teaches on topics such as media and society, pop culture, and storytelling with data, and is developing research projects on attention, affect, and representation in the post-broadcast era.
