Drives us cats!
World's greatest detective!
Drives us cats!
Thwarting Doc's crazy schemes!

The Burns family plays a round of basketball in preparation for an upcoming charity match between the teachers and rescue workers, however Kade has a problem with passing the ball, making all the shots himself. Hayley, who's been watching them practice, is disappointed with his attitude since she was hoping the children would learn something about teamwork, and departs on her hovermoped. The rest of the family walks off as well, however Cody gets an emergency call from Mrs. Neederlander about her cat. Resigned, the team rolls to the rescue, and finds Mrs. Neederlander's tree is filled with copies of Mister Pettypaws. As they try to round up the cats, Doc Greene arrives with a timely explanation — he's been experimenting with boosting the power on his Imaging Device, causing it to be able to replicate his waking thoughts, and he was thinking about Mister Pettypaws. The cats are able to survive outside the imaging chamber by virtue of the collar power sources they're all wearing. As they try to round up the cats, Heatwave uses his water jets, "accidentally" shorting out Kade's comlink in the process. Once the collars are removed, the clones vanish and the real Mister Pettypaws emerges from the house where he's been hiding.

Everyone heads back to the lab for a demonstration of the Imaging Device's new capability. Kade grabs a doughnut to eat before Doc has him lie in the machine for the demonstration, however a fuse blows before the device can produce anything. The rescue team is called away to Old Canyon Road where a rock slide has hit a bridge. While Kade continues to be at his most obnoxious, the team clears the rocks and Dani and Boulder extract Mrs. Rubio from her car, though not without a near miss from some more falling rocks. Meanwhile, Doc Greene replaces the fuse at the lab, and the Imagine Device reactivates, spitting out four more Kades. The rescue team returns to the fire station, where Heatwave tries unsuccessfully to get Kade to help buff out a scratch he sustained during the rescue. Dani and Cody play a video game and are bemused when Kade seems to make two very large sandwiches in a short space of time. Heatwave is weirded out when Kade suddenly wants to help him buff, and downstairs Kade also joins in with Chase quizzing Blades on police codes. One Kade has a brief and strange phone conversation with Hayley, while outside another throws his back out trying to lift a barbell.

Oh, I never learn the names of basketball players, they're all the same!

With Kade continuing to act oddly, the rest of the team have a meeting in the bunker. The situation finally becomes apparent when all five Kades turn up to see what's happening. Luckily Doc Greene chooses this moment to call with an explanation, though he's surprised the Kades can continue to exist without an apparent power source. Kade's just thrilled to finally have a whole basketball team made up of himself, and as he tries to get them to work like a team, Boulder and Graham observe that the clones each seem to reflect a different part of Kade's psyche. The party's broken up by an emergency call about a broken gas main, and the team, including all of the Kades, head out there. When Kade and one of his clones start fighting over Heatwave's steering wheel, causing an accident that knocks Boulder off the road, Chief Burns orders the Kades back to the fire house. Since Heatwave refuses to take them, they end up flying back in a very unhappy Blades. Meanwhile, Hayley also turns up at the fire station looking for an apology. Though Kade tries to get his more pleasant clone to go apologize for him, he ends up doing it himself, successfully.

The team at the broken gas main are about to start work when a falling power cable ignites the gas, quickly surrounding the team. Back at the fire station, the Kades and Cody talk to Doc Greene and they realize that the clones are each carrying a copy of the doughnut Kade picked up at the lab. As it turns out, they're being powered by the shorted-out comlink. Before Kade can farewell his clones by taking away the comlinks, they get a distress call from Chief Burns, resulting in Blades and the Kades heading over to help. Blades attempts to fly the human team members out, only to be brought down by a falling tree, however with some teamwork, the Kades manage to extinguish the fire and save everyone. The Kade clones finally hand over their comlinks and disappear a puff of smoke. Though Dani confesses she'll miss the other Kades, Kade promises that they'll still be around, though the others are skeptical that he'll share the basketball.

"There's a shock!"

Notes

Continuity notes

  • The Imaging Device was previously introduced in "Blame the Gremlins". The gremlins in that story were the same purple color as the "smoke" the device formed them from, but in this story the constructs are colored like the real thing.
  • The computer game Cody and Dani are playing appears to be Griffin Rock Element Quest, previously seen as a VR game in "A Virtual Disaster".

Transformers references

Real-world references

  • Graham's pose when Boulder is painting him is that of classic Greek sculpture Discobolus.
  • Doc Greene makes reference to real-life physicist Enrico Fermi.

Animation and technical errors

  • There are several scenes where clones are seen without their jackets, yet the faulty comm link powering them is supposed to be in the right jacket pocket. How do they sustain themselves without it?

Trivia

  • Vehicle registration request is actually a 10–28, 10-27 is a driver's license request. Kade gets the high five anyway.
  • Livestock on highway is a 10–54.
  • Where have I seen this plot and title before...
  • Two of the clones ate sandwiches which were not created by the device, so when the clones disappeared some matter should stay behind afterwards. Eyuw.
  • The clones are told apart by armbands matching the bots and their respective personalities.
