Everyone goes to Cybertron where a familiar evil from Optimus's past is gathering power.

Synopsis

Cybertron: Hot Rod arrives via Spacebridge carrying the Emberstone, and is followed by Robby and Mo Malto moments later. Hot Rod simply transforms and drives away, and Mo has to stop Robby's futile attempt at pursuit, insisting they need to go back and get backup. Menacing shapes close in on the two kids, forcing them to seek a hiding place, but the shelter they find is soon ripped away.

The rest of the Malto family along with Bumblebee and Megatron also arrive, and Alex identifies their landing point as Praxus, though the city appears to be in ruins. They head for a nearby secret Autobot base which Bumblebee knows will have a Spark scanner. While they walk, Thrash spots footprints and thinks they should follow the tracks, leading to an argument with Twitch which he acquiesces on. They eventually reach the base, but initial scans show no spark signatures in the city. As scans continue, Thrash attempts to use an Autobot secure channel to contact Optimus, but inadvertently attracts a horde of Sparkless to the building, forcing the group to fight until the scan can finish. Finally Bumblebee manages to lure the horde outside before the scan finishes, giving the team two possible leads: a dead zone where the scan has been blocked, and the location of two Decepticons. Twitch and Thrash break into an argument over which of the two options is the best to pursue. It becomes more heated when Twitch realizes Thrash has told the others about her issue and ends with the pair deciding to pursue their chosen leads.

Hashtag, Alex, Bumblebee and Nightshade join Twitch in heading towards the scan void and she grouses about her brother. Meanwhile Megatron, Dot and Jawbreaker accompany Thrash to the location of the two Decepticons where Thrash scouts ahead to find there are actually three Transformers there. Twitch finds only a huge hole in the ground and she realizes she's led them to absolutely nothing and Thrash was right. The others try to cheer her up, but they're interrupted by the arrival of Decepticons, specifically Shockwave's group returned from Earth, and a fight ensues.

The other group find the three Decepticons have gone, but are soon under attack by a group of identical bots — Mirage and his holographic clones, and their attempts to convince the Autobot that they're on the same side fall on deactivated audio sensors. When Thrash gets comms from Twitch asking for help, his team is too busy fighting Mirage to go help. Dot suddenly spots human footprints on the ground and follows them to a nearby building where she finds Robby and Mo in exosuits, getting the two kids to convince Mirage to stop fighting. Robby and Mo quickly fill the others in on what Hot Rod's done before wondering where everyone else is, causing Thrash to remember Twitch's earlier distress call. Meanwhile Twitch's team has reached an impasse with the Decepticons, but then a huge structure rises from the ground — Liege Maximo's fortress.

Optimus Prime is hauled in chains to a pod which opens revealing Liege Maximo. Optimus is shocked as he and the other Primes had long ago combined forces to trap Maximo in a void. Maximo reveals he's tracked down and destroyed the other Primes, wielding the Star Saber as proof of Prima's death. Maximo intends to use the power he's accumulated to take control of worlds and transform them into energon, and to this end he wants the Matrix of Leadership so he can command other life forms. He begins cutting into Optimus's chest, however the fortress has been invaded by Mirage, who is able to rescue Optimus, Elita-1 and Wheeljack, but Maximo prevents them from rescuing Prowl and they're forced to leave without their comrade.

Thrash's group joins Twitch's team in the battle against the 'Cons, and they're soon also joined by Optimus Prime's group emerging from Maximo's fortress. Even with reinforcements, they're forced to flee when the 'Cons take Dot, Alex and Thrash hostage. The trio are taken before an unimpressed Maximo.

Mirage takes the others to Mirage's Garage, an old converted Decepticon base. The Autobots observe they feel like they're low on energon, and Nightshade works out that it's as if Cybertron itself is leeching power from them — Mirage confirms that that's why everyone's joined "Team Liege". With few other options, they come up with a plan to get an energon refinery working again, and with the Cybertronians out of action bar Mirage, the task is assigned to the Terrans. Once they leave, Megatron realizes Maximo will need to take the Emberstone and Enigma of Combination to the Well of Sparks. Optimus wants to go scout the area, but Megatron points out he needs to keep the Matrix safe, so instead Bumblebee heads out with Megatron and Elita-1. A short time later, Mo realizes Robby has gone — he's joined the trio, with Bumblebee reluctantly agreeing to let him tag along.

Twitch's team reaches the energon refinery where Nightshade effects repairs with the help of Wheeljack via comms. While this is happening, the rest of the team is jumped by Scorponok but keep him busy until Nightshade completes the fix. Scorponok tries to claim the energon in Liege Maximo's name, leading to him chasing the Terrans until Jawbreaker renders him unconscious. The group heads out into a sandstorm and begin making their way back to the garage.

Liege Maximo arrives at the Well of Sparks with Hot Rod and Soundwave. Bumblebee's group observes from a distance as Maximo pulls out the Enigma and Emberstone. Scorponok arrives and reports on events at the refinery, believing Twitch's team will have perished in the sandstorm. The group has, in fact, arrived back at the garage minus Twitch, who is lost in the sandstorm. At the Well, Robby sees his opportunity and goes for the Emberstone, only to be struck down by Maximo. The Enigma and Emberstone combine over the Well, producing a column of light and creating huge metal tendrils from the surface of Cybertron which spread to other nearby planets. Liege Maximo claims victory and demands to know where Optimus and the Matrix of Leadership are. When the team refuses to tell him, Liege pulls a staff from his chest and uses it to probe Robby's mind and discover the location of Mirage's Garage.

Still lost in the sandstorm, Twitch is knocked out by a piece of flying debris and finds herself in the presence of Quintus Prime. She berates him for not being there for her and insists he go talk to someone more worthy, but he instead leaves her with some words of inspiration. In the garage, Optimus is fading fast when Twitch arrives with the energon. Her warning about the incoming Decepticons allows them to ambush the 'Cons. This only gives them a small advantage, and Optimus's attempts to reason with Hot Rod don't go well. Finally Liege himself turns up and, pointing the Requiem Blaster at Optimus, demands the Matrix. Optimus reluctantly opens his chest to reveal an empty cavity. Maximo quickly works out that the missing Twitch has the Matrix and orders Hot Rod to go find her, shrugging off his request for energon. Hot Rod reacts by turning on Maximo.

Twitch arrives at Maximo's fortress with the energon from the refinery and frees everyone. Thrash is taken aback when Twitch is supportive of him, and heads off with Elita and Prowl to help Optimus. Twitch and the rest of the group stay to search as Twitch has sensed via the Matrix that someone is in great pain.

At the garage, Maximo beats Optimus severely until Swindle suggests maybe they go look for Twitch, however Maximo is sure she'll turn up to help her family.

Twitch's group stumbles on the source of the feelings of pain she's been experiencing — the AllSpark! They're joined by Breakdown, but soon realize that the AllSpark is draining the energon out of everything and one due to a Liegian Dart stuck in the side of it. As a human, Robby is immune to the AllSpark's power and pulls the dart from it.

Liege Maximo terminates Optimus with the Star Saber, a state of affairs that lasts all of a second before Optimus is brought back online by the power of the AllSpark. The Decepticons, realizing Maximo has been lying to them about the AllSpark's destruction, turn on the Prime and blast him through the roof before leaving. Liege is still defiant before the Autobot/Malto forces, using the Star Saber to call in another horde of Sparkless. The team is able to take out the Sparkless, leaving just Maximo again, but he produces the Blades of Time, intending to use them to turn Breakdown back to his side. Bumblebee throws himself in front of Breakdown and the blades regress him to an earlier form. Maximo then unleashes the Blades on Megatron while fighting Optimus, before terminating the former Decepticon leader with the Requiem Blaster. Maximo demands the Matrix and Twitch throws it to him before the Terrans all attack the evil Prime. Quickly realizing that the horns are his weak point, they manage to slice said horns off, resulting in Liege Maximo disappearing into a singularity.

The mechanical tendrils connecting the nearby worlds retract, freeing them. Optimus picks up the discarded Matrix and returns it to his chest, while Robby turns down Hot Rod's offer of the Emberstone back. They take Megatron's body to the AllSpark, which mends the hole in his chest however he is still dead. Jawbreaker announces he's staying on Cybertron for a while, and the family shares a hug, right as Megatron returns to life. Unfortunately the Blades of Time have regressed him to his hostile wartime self, and he immediately leaves through the Spacebridge. Twitch believes they can turn Megatron back to the side of good, and the team rolls out to go find him.

'Til all are one.

Notes

Continuity notes

  • Twitch is continuing her issues from the previous episode of feeling useless because she was out of action during the battle against the Quintessons.
  • The AllSpark returns. We first learned in "Warzone" that Megatron threw the Allspark into the Space Bridge back in 2007 and had wondered ever since if it made it back to Cybertron. Well, it did... kinda.
  • Breakdown standing guard over an imprisoned Bumblebee might be a role reversal from the Season 1 finale "The Last Hope, Part 2" when Bumblebee was outside of Breakdown's prison cell.

Transformers references

  • The Earth side of the Space Bridge is the now-standard portal generator, but the Cybertron side is pulled straight from the original cartoon, a ring-like structure that opens at the front after the travelers beam down from the sky.
  • The concept of Sparkless zombie-like Transformers originates in the Transformers: War for Cybertron cartoon.
  • Liege Maximo originates from the Generation 2 Marvel comics. While he's had a few appearances in print since then, this is his first major role in an animated production.
  • The tendrils interconnecting planets results in a structure that evokes the Hub, Maximo’s project which was lightly touched on in G2 and explored in more detail in the unofficial Alignment.
  • The Exosuits were first introduced in The Transformers: The Movie.
  • Mirage's ability to multiply himself was popularized in Rise of the Beasts, his more jokey light-hearted personality also seems to be based off his depiction from the film.
  • The staff Liege uses to probe Robby's memories is Onyx Prime's Triptych Mask, portrayed as a spear rather than an actual mask like it was in Transformers One and the recent Age of the Primes toy.
  • The Requiem Blaster sports The Fallen's unique insignia created for Power of the Primes.
  • Speaking of The Fallen, Liege Maximo's given backstory of turning on the rest of the Thirteen and being imprisoned in another dimension is highly reminiscent of Megatronus’ usual story. They even mention having erased Maximo from history!
  • Optimus Prime was apparently present for the Thirteen's defeat of Liege Maximo, all but stating that he himself was one of their number. Issue is, Prime himself stated in an earlier episode that he was once Orion Pax. The probable intent was for him to have been reincarnated from the Thirteenth Prime, like his Aligned continuity counterpart, but this is never addressed on-screen.
  • While probably not intentional, Hot Rod's portrayal as a reluctant follower of a system he knows is flawed while trying to do as much good as he can from the inside bears more than a little resemblance to his portrayal in Beast Wars: Uprising.
  • The Blades of Time are the artifact of Vector Prime, though their portrayal here differs from past stories; in the novel Transformers: Exiles and guidebook The Covenant of Primus, the Blades were used to open portals (to the Realm of the Primes and to Unicron, respectively); rewinding time on an individual’s mind and body is new. Plus, they were slivers of metal that assembled into an hourglass shape, not Legacy: Evolution Prowl's shuriken.
  • Megatron's last line is a riff on his Beast Wars' counterpart famous quote from the opening of "Nemesis Part 2".

Real-world references

Errors

  • Maximo mispronounces Prima's name as “Pree-ma”.
  • Why did the Decepticons seemingly build human-controllable exo-suits on Cybertron?
  • If the Blades of Time can regress Bumblebee's body back to how it used to be, why didn't it do the same for Megatron? Megatron in the past said he adopted his tiltrotor aircraft alternate mode as a sign of good faith in his heel-face turn, we could probably chalk that up to the animators not having made a pre-Earth mode Megatron design but it does seem like an oversight.

Trivia

  • Aaron LaPlante joins the cast of EarthSpark in this episode, but oddly, is only credited as "Additional Voices." This happened with Eric Bauza and Vanessa Marshall before him, and may suggest he was originally cast as one of the new characters featured in this special, only to be replaced after recording.

  • Still on that note, Breakdown changes voice again. And this, despite the presence of Arthur Pestel, who voiced him in The Last Hope, who dubs Hot Rod in this very episode. Who cares? It's only the big finale...
