Single visit by US leader will not resolve Beijing-Washington trade tensions — expert

Commenting on Trump's transactional approach to foreign policy, Su Xiaohui noted that the mode of interaction between China and the US is not dictated by Washington

SHANGHAI, May 15. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump's visit to Beijing will not resolve all trade and economic tensions between China and the United States, Su Xiaohui, Deputy Director of the Department of American Studies at the China Institute of International Studies, told TASS.

"Trade and economic issues cannot be immediately resolved by a single state visit," Su Xiaohui said. "However, this visit demonstrated some positive shifts in trade and economic relations that will facilitate further communication between the two sides, ultimately leading to mutual benefits and win-win outcomes."

Commenting on Trump's transactional approach to foreign policy, the expert noted that the mode of interaction between China and the US is not dictated by Washington. "It's not that we don't want to make deals, but we don't do it the US way," she added.

Trump visited China from May 13-15. He described his visit as "incredible" and stated that the two sides had managed to resolve many issues. The Chinese Foreign Ministry noted that interaction between Chinese President Xi Jinping and the US President during the White House chief's visit to Beijing contributed to deepening Sino-US cooperation and global stability.

Following Trump's return to the presidency in early 2025, the trade war between the US and China escalated. Washington imposed additional tariffs on Chinese goods, to which Beijing responded with countermeasures, including export controls on rare earth metals. The situation eased in May 2025 following trade and economic consultations between the two nations. However, by October, the escalation resumed with threats of tariff hikes and the introduction of port fees. Following the October meeting of the US and Chinese leaders in Busan, the sides agreed to a partial tariff reduction, an extension of the suspension of reciprocal tariffs, and the lifting of a number of trade and economic restrictions.
